Canadian Dollar |
Was doing some research.... (ok, ok, just aimlessly surfing the web), when I came upon this tidbit:
In 1858, the Province of Canada wanted to move away from the Pound Sterling (and its odd coin system) in favour of a decimal system like the United States. Due to increased trade with the States, and anti-British sentiments there, a new name for the currency was needed. Ultimately, 'dollar' was chosen to appeal to North Americans in general.
The runner up for the name of the currency?
"Royal"
Wouldn't it be interesting to have a 5 Royal note? Would it have been R5 or 5R, or would a different symbol have been used? Like this or like this or even this?
Kinda like the second one myself.
