As a 'resident' of Mexico, I can feel your pain. But I must insist, that you don't judge the entire country by that one unfortunate incident (sorta like "don't judge a book by its cover").
My wife and I have travelled extensively around the world over the years, and have seen the bad as well as the good.
I remember once taking a (Carnival) cruise originating from Puerto Rico. The Hotel we stayed in for overnight before the cruise (booked through an agent) was to be a 3 star rating. Good enough as we were just spending the night. WELL, let me tell you, it was definitely NOT a 3 star under ANY circumstances. The second floor was totally demolished for 'renovations', there was NO restaurant //dining room, the carpets looked like they were found in the trash....I could go on and on. Thankfully it was only for the night. Do I think all of Puerto Rico is like that. Definitely not.
I'll also add that back in Canada there are some pretty shabby places.
So again, I say, don't blame Mexico. It is a large country with many different diverse areas. AND, some of the best food can be had from the street vendors.
