"Absolutely every store in WA will happily take CDN, with the sole exception of some crotchety old asshole who owns a WSLCB liquor store on Meridian Street in Bellingham. That guy is just about the grumpiest dude I've ever met. Furthermore, his reasoning behind not accepting CDN (even though all the other stores in the chain do) is that "This is America, and in America we use American money. You don't see folks back in Canada trying you use American money." is nonsense. I hope he's retired or dead the next time I go back. The only reason I shop there is that the Whatcom County Bus Line stops in his parking lot on its way back up the Mount Baker Hwy to Maple Falls."
Nice to hear most of the border Americans are reasonable about accepting Canadian money where you are! I'm sure most are around here too - I'm two hours from both Windsor-Detroit and Niagara-Buffalo, the two busiest borders between our countries, so it'd be hard for them not to. (Personally, I prefer to take American cash over the border with me cause I like using and getting one-dollar bills WAY more than coins!)
And I live in a tourist city two hours from the border, so accepting American cash is pretty much standard fare with all our businesses. (What was that liquor store guy you dealt with thinking?)
I did have one bad experience similar to yours though - a man in a Buffalo mall covenience store who wouldn't accept a Canadian penny that was in my change for a chocolate bar I wanted to buy. Yep, just one single penny.
When I gave him the argument that Americans spend their cash up here all the time, his response was that it's different "because [American money] is a world currency."
Yeah, you're in a border town literally minutes from one of the busiest borders in the world, and you're going to give me the double standard over a penny because you feel your currency's superior. Thanks for that, dickwad.
If I remember right, I'm pretty sure I didn't buy the chocolate bar.
