stats for users online

What is going on with the stats for users online? Is it possible that there were 1217 anonymous users at one time, or is there something wrong with the system? Who are all these people - very few of whom seem to do more than pass through?

A quick check of the logs shows that it's just the Googlebot crawling through all the site's pages.
