As LC mentioned, nobody has brought up the recent disaster in southern Asia.
Perhaps it is because of the scope of the event. We have been simply at a loss for words and too shocked to comment. Add to that the flood of stories continuing to emanate from the region, and you may have a reason for our silence.
For those needing a visual grasp, I will probably be posting a few links in the next few days. Start off with this animation that Sarge found:
<a href=http://ioc.unesco.org/itsu/templates/itsu/images/animation.gif target=_blank>Tsunami animation</a> from <a href=http://ioc.unesco.org/itsu/ target=_blank>this website.</a>
I just learned today 2 of my cousins were vacationing in Phuket at the time. Luckily it sounds like they'll be ok. It's unfortunate that can't be said for so many, many others.
One of my co-workers was vacationing in Phuket as well, unfortunately he hasn't been heard from for several days….
The sister-in-law had a co-worker vacationing in Sri-Lanka, whom she has also not heard from.
The sister-in-law and her husband vacationed in Phe Phe within the last year and her husband was speaking with a friend xmas day who had just returned from the area.
Perhaps at the next coffee meet in saskatoon and any meets anywhere else in the soon future, a collection should be taken for all the unfortunate souls who survived this disaster and have to try to stay alive!
I was thinking that exact thing Wally, such as maybe the 50 50 that is done the 50 that isn't won should go to the red cross or something like that to help the situation there.
I will arrange a 50/50 draw with the funds going to the Red Cross or similar organization in Saskatoon CMTer's name.
despite all of Man's inventions and creations, we're still vulnerable to the violent rock we call home. as Bono sang in "do they know it's christmas": 'tonight thank God it's them instead of you.' as we sit and watch the aftermath of something so horrible. who knows what, when, or where the next disaster will strike and we could be in it.
I just wish all those who know people that were hit by the tsunami best wishs & the people be found.
Man may destroy himself in the way he uses the earth but like for the millions of years b4 man, Earth will remain.
Earth has been around much longer than man & will propser much longer after man is gone.
I have a couple friends who are spending 2 months in Thailand and have not heard anything yet. They're traveling with a woman who was originally from Thailand and were going to be staying with various relatives of this woman, so I have no way of knowing where in Thailand they were when the tsunami hit.
Does anyone know of any internet sites/numbers to call providing information about missing Canadians?
