It's rotten to see that the people of Saskatchewan have so much money to enter on this site, but very little to leave the restaurant folk! It's so sad it's funny. :(

Glad I wasn't the only one that didn't like the math in that one. $500 bill should have equalled at least a $50 tip, but should have been closer to $75. 29 people leaving a $30 tip, that's only a loonie per person.

When it is only one group like that it makes the work harder not the other way around. That's 29 meals & drink orders that are to be taken and prepared at once.

Kitkat, no that was only one group, most of us out here are better at math than that ;)

The easiest and most fair to a server in leaving a tip is to double the tax and add one dollar. Unless you're in Alberta where the tax is less. It's something that my grandma told me! I got a smart grandma!

In Saskatchewan, taxes would be 13.5%. So doubling it is 27%.

I think that that is just a bit high. 10% is fine with me, unless I get good service and a smiling server, then I go 15%.

And since the advent of the GST, I'm tipping less. Servers should complain to Ottawa about tax on food!

As a server myself, that sounds pretty darn good. Especially if they drink a lot of booze (17% liqour tax in BC last time I checked) But it's another thing altogether if it actually happens!

I think that what everyone fails to understand is that there are 2 taxes. Federal and Provincal. One only is charged on food in BC. On average it's about 7%. Doubling that would be 14%. Still above the typical, but low 10% and below the average 15%. Understandably not everyone believes in tipping. That's fair. But for those who do at least understand the unwritten rules.

For me it depends on the attitude of the server and how much they have to do…numerous trips to the kitchen or bar; smiling or laughing at dumb comments; obnoxious customers; etc.
Last year in Kamsack, 4 people from my high school class (of 10 total) got together for a reunion. (My high school wasn't in Kamsack…it was just the most central place for those attending) We had a big supper at a town restaurant…meals and drinks alone came out to about $75.00 each. With the above criteria, and the fantastic service, the TIP we left was over $80.00.
