More replacement bills

Just looking over the bill prefixes entered, and for those who follow such things, here are the number of bills entered in each replacement prefix:

AJX 21
FNX 9
ENX 6
GPX 4
BDX 3
ESX 3
ATX 2
EVX 2
ANX 1
ADX 1
AVX 1
AWX 1

i think that it's worthy of note (pardon the pun) that from this list, the bank of canada NEVER made notes with the following prefixes (for the denomination and year listed) according to my charlton's (16th ed, 2004)

AVX (1991 $20)
AWX (1991 $20)
EVX (1991 $20)
ESX (1991 $20)
BDX (1989 $10)
GPX (1986 $5)

this might account for the VERY low numbers entered for each of these series. dr might want to have a look at these and maybe remove them from the database (and we might want to check, say, ALL series for which there are fewer than 5 entries). i'll just say that these must be honest mistakes in entry, rather than someone trying to punch in bogus numbers to increase their entry totals… :)

Are these bills of any signifigant value and should they be saved? Are they plentiful or few? Does anyone out there collect such bills? Or are they just a plain old everyday bill?

Lord_Comedy

a replacement bill is collected by some, and no they are not just a plain old everyday bill, however the mint tries to make them that.
they are bills printed to replace bills that were initally printed badly or had defects.

rudyk

they are extremely collectable and in demand, teepeejay. for example, the AIX $20 is listed at at least $100 in UNC condition (depending on signatures). you may end up paying even more on ebay. the bank used to use the "X" designation to denote a replacement but do not want to encourage hoarding of ANY money so they have since started making "insert" bills… regular serialled notes in a specific range inserted to replace those unfit for distribution. they are harder to pick out from the rest and a lot of the evidence for "replacements" is word-of-mouth now.

note that some of the "X" bills listed in CMT's database are likely fictitious.

i beg to differ, just because there are low numbers on X bills doesnt mean you should delete them. If the bank says they never made them then sure, but there are no bills on this site with the prefix my X 2 has.

EDIT: then again there are only 40 2's on the site. lol.

i stand by what i said earlier in the thread. my research shows that there are a number of banknotes entered here with prefixes that the bank of canada never issued. those should be deleted from the database because they cannot exist. i did not suggest that YOUR x notes don't exist – i am sure they are of prefixes that are valid and recognised.

rudyk

oh, they haven't stopped MAKING them, it's just that they aren't REPLACEMENTS any more, and thus not really collectable (well, no more so than any other generic note)

MmmBeer

No, currently there is no bills with an X letter as the last being produced. Replacement bills are now assigned a certain part of a prefix serial number range.
Take the Prefix FUT (it doesnt exist but whatever)
Serial numbers FUT9120000 - FUT9200000 may be replacement bills. This is so because now they dont have to make a new type of bill for every error bill they catch, but just take a bill ou of an already made stack of assigned rplacements..

Get what Im saying?
