the third letter in the prefix should be an 'X'
I don't know for sure if this is for all bills but shoud be true for $20's

Sorry, it's a 1954 $5.00 bill and it's N/X and the right hand edge is almost cut off and everything is very far off center.

in all 1954 notes of less than $50, replacements were denoted with an asterisk to the left of the serial number. it made it VERY easy to tell a replacement. later series got a little trickier, with the "X" used in some 3-letter prefixes. now, replacements are in a number series that is not easily discerned but collectors keep track of.

sorry to say that your bill doesn't sound especially valuable – there were 160,000,00 of that series made. it sounds like it isn't ENOUGH off centre to be an error bill, so it being off, would only reduce it's value. in VG condition, a bill from that series fetches a whole $6.50.

(my sense of "error" bills is that part of the actual design would have to be missing for it to be an error.
