If anyone is interested, here is a radio segment on Ottawa's local CBC radio on the Where's Willy website.
http://ottawa.cbc.ca/media/ontariotoday/2002032120020321willy.ram
(you need RealAudio player to listen)
Also, the guy at the Bank of Canada that they interview says that there is nothing illegal (per se) about writing on bank notes. So that's kinda neat.

I find it funny how WW continues to get media coverage and for some reason CMT does not. Maybe we don't want it, as it probably brings in the crazies, and we are doing just fine, in fact we are doing very well, without almost any media coverage.
Thats what ive said before, and ill say it again.. Media gets us no more Hits than we do now just more users, bills get us more hits and users!!!
Some Quebec coverage would be nice.
As many of you know, I've been tracking the inputs of both sites for the last 5 months. In the last 5 day period, likely due to the segment, they suddenly doubled the number of entered bills compared to any 5 day segment in the previous 2 months. I'll keep watching to see if this is just a temporary blip in the stats, or if there will be a long term effect.
In the meantime, it wouldn't hurt for us to find some media too. Perhaps some University or Tech School newspapers?
Should email the station or the announcer and tell them that there is a CANADIAN site doing the same thing.
BUT… it was interesting to hear what the Bank of Canada had to say.
The top user has only 1900 bills?!?!?! How the H… did he get 800 hits!
"How the H… did he get 800 hits!"
There is definitely something rotten at the Dark Site! and if it smells rotten, well…
Should email the station or the announcer and tell them that there is a CANADIAN site doing the same thing.
Nah, I like the way we are growing from within and naturally per se. And I like it for a number of reasons:
- I think we end up with a better quality of users
- The number of fake hits is kept to a minimum
- We don't end up with 4 b-zillion users/hits/traffic/etc overnight, that would force me to probably buy a new server and host the server at a new place.
These are all good reasons, but for you guys #3 is probably the most significant. Because the growth of this site is fairly steady, I am able to anticipate when I may need to buy a new machine and adjust the hosting situation. And, at the same time I can make changes to the back-end code as need be. If, overnight, were were to get the traffic that WW gets, the site would most probably slow to a crawl and you would all be denied your money tracking fix for as long as a week. This site is simply a hobby and as such, I can't take a day or two off from my client work to do emergency updates and such on this site.
So, in the end, while we may not have as many users, bills, hits, or whatever, I think we have a good thing going as we are right now. And the argument on their site about more bills == more chance for hits is bunk. :)
On an unrelated note, check this out; the WG/WW owner is selling a certain user id number…

In a similar vein…
The Canadian Paper Money site recently announced that it had reached the 100,000 hit mark.
I know you don't like to keep a running tab online, but whereabouts is this site in terms of web hits right now?
I know you don't like to keep a running tab online, but whereabouts is this site in terms of web hits right now?
Umm, that's a bit subjective. When you say "hits" do you mean total hits on the site (ie. including images) or just hits on the index page? And do you mean unique visitors, etc…
In terms of raw hits / user visits per month:
November 2001: 38910 2170
December 2001: 58041 2267
January 2002: 89707 3558
February 2002: 78844 3403
March 2002: 153333 ???
As you can see, March isn't over yet and there is a substancial jump up in terms of hits. So, we'll have to see where that takes us.
-dr
P.S. In March 2001 the site had 1696 hits in total. Then in April we jumped to 12483, largely in part due to Pooga. Yay, Pooga!
Wow! Some kind of numbers! I know you probably hoped to see those kind of numbers, but did you actually believe that it was possible???
So raw hits since Day 1 is probably in the order of 500,000 or so??
Then in April we jumped to 12483, largely in part due to Pooga.
"largely in part" … oxymoron?
My first anniversary is coming up in a couple of weeks, but I wasn't the only one in April. Sarge and Whopper, and a few others were in there as new users as well.
Pooga, you seemed to have assumed the role as site historian. I can hardly wait to read the book.
Tip: don't let your wife hear you talk about 'anniversaries' other than hers. She'll probably throw you out of the house and you'll have way more time on your hands. I don't need the competition.
And the people using this site are very interesting and likely, interested. There's also spice provided by the 'pool of insanity' in Saskatoon and environs. I've visited the 'other site' once. Stiff, pretentious, arrogant. In bird watching circles they are known as 'listers'. The chase and the numbers at all costs are what counts. They have no time for reading Robert Service or talking about bagpipes, or writing books. Assumptions I guess but they make me feel good.
Oxymoron: has intrigued me etymologically for some time. Pooga, what's your guess re. its roots? Its definition seems to define itself. An unusual epithet.
I have made a list of several Oxymorons… Homework, Igloobeach, bunnyrabbit, etc. I have caught a few more over a period of 3 years. Cant name em all.
Pooga: I think you should save the juicy info for those who take the trouble to come out to one of the 'gatherings'.
–oxymoron
Bonus: Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another: What! You, too? Thought I was the only one. -Clive Staples Lewis, novelist and essayist (1898-1963)
oxymoron (ok-see-MOR-on, -mor-) noun, plural oxymora or oxymorons
A rhetorical figure in which incongruous or contradictory terms are
combined, as in a deafening silence and a mournful optimist.
[Greek oxumoron, from neuter of oxumoros, pointedly foolish : oxus, sharp +
moros, foolish, dull.]
"Myron Krueger, the man who coined the oxymoron `artificial reality' for
the title of a 1983 book, has created an installation called Video Place
at Connecticut's State Museum of Natural History, in Storrs."
D. Stewart & P. Menzel, Through the looking glass into an artificial
world–via computer, Smithsonian, Jan 1991.
thanks Pooga. pretty informative. tx for the word website also. mmMBeer raises an interesting and inexpensive suggestion for a hobby ie collecting and collating 'oxymorons'. Probably would be able to publish it and sell it. Anybody that comes up with one send it to me.
Yaa, me and my dad usually find some just as we're talking, or on signs, etc.. If your planning on selling it, I want some Profit. Anyway, id like to hear some too. I like to figure out the Paradox.

Anglofrog is not an oxymoron, it is truth.
I tried to listen to that radio segment, but my comp tells me its not a" Real Audio document". What was that segment all about in a nutshell? In other words ,what is WWW ?
