Here's a searchable one for you dr…
How many bills have had the same number entered, regardless of the prefix? eg. XXX1234567.
Based on 10 million numbers in a series, and about half a million bills entered, I would guess that the odds would be about 1 in 20.
If we do have a match, what denominations and who entered them?
this is off topic, pooga, but if anyone happens to find a note with such a serial number, please do not mark it. notes with the serial number in sequential order (ladder notes) are more collectable than RADARs!
i know that wasn't the point of your query, pooga, but folks may know about RADARs but not the other special collectables and your example just reminded me that it should be mentioned.
and speaking of…. if someone IS lucky enough to find ANY matched set of serial numbers on notes (same or different denominations) they are very collectable as well!
and further digressively…. if you find notes of the same serial number and prefix of the SAME denomination… please go to your local police with them. you really don't want to be collecting THEM at all… :)
Sticking to your matching serial numbers on different denominations… did you see the rewards on the Choice Rewards Program with C-Unions ? they have the set, in 5 and a 10 in a beautiful case… I will look into it, to see if they still have that in their recent catalogue.
I think that I was WAY off on my odds.
10 million bills in a series, one of which has to match another bill in one of 675 OTHER series. Let's call it 500 for ease of calculation.
So there are 500 bills in circulation with the same number out of a total printing of half a BILLION bills.
odds: 1 in a million.
We have half a million bills entered. I think that we still have a shot at it!
well since you have 10,000,000 #'s for serial #
and we have 1,000,000 then the odds at 1 in 10 that we already have such a coincidence
No. That's 10 million in just one series. ONE of those bills has to match ONE bill in one of other 500 series. Even if we had a million bills entered, the odds of a match would still be 1 in 500. As the number of bills entered increases, the odds go down geometrically, not arithmetically.
Go through my numbers again.
:) Pooga nearly everything 1 way or another can be explained by math.
As I said we have 10,000,000 #'s on for serial number. Reguardless of prefix
Now take the 526 K of bills we have entered on the site.
that is 526 000 chances of entering the same 7 digit code, Reguardless of prefix & denomination.
Earlier I did the calculation for 1 M bills entered for the site.
A given if we had 10,000,001 bills entered the chance / probability that we have entered at least 1 bill with the same digits. is 1
but with 1 M it is 1 in 10.
however we have a little better than 1/2 M
that cuts the odds down to 1 in 20.
Do the math, it is simple math.
LC, I lost you after the :)
can you explain again please ?
Just go back & read it.
Or do you need to learn to read a math prof yet?
PS Poogie..
The series is irrelevent. just the 10 M and 1/2 M entered is relelvent to the chance of having 2 serial # ' s the same reguardless of prefix.
You may have a point there.
But I would defer to a statistician.
I can't see the low odds. But if we had 10 million entered, then the odds of getting a match would approach certainty. But only 500 out of half a billion bills would match one of the 500,000 we have entered. I think that it might be a bit more complex than what you're suggesting.
Rest assured Poogie.
Math is my strong subject.
this isn't like flipping a quarter..
where each time you flip a coin you get 50% chance of heads or tails
this is more like 6/49 10 billion - 1 odds
but if for 1 draw you buy 9 billion tickets.. none that match you have a 90 % chance of winning
WHOOOOOO ARE WE STARTING A MATH WAR HERE. YA LOST ME ABOUT FOUR THREADS BACK BUT LETS BREAK THIS DOWN TO BASICS.
1.) WE WANT TO KNOW IF WE HAVE THE SAME NUMBERS LISTED IN OUR SYSTEM WITH ONLY THE PREFIX DIFFERENT.
2.) WE WOULD LIKE A METHOD TO FIND THE ANSWER TO NUMBER ONE.
3.) I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW WHAT YOU DO LORD COMEDY FOR A LIVING? I DO THINK YOUR TOP OF THE CLASS IN MATH AND THAT GETS ME TO THINKING WHAT DOES A MATH WIZ DO FOR A DAY JOB?
4.) WE KNOW WHAT YOU DO POOGA AND A NOBLE TASK IT IS BRINGING SUCH PLEASURE TO SO MANY.
NOW BETWEEN THE TWO OF YOU MY HEAD STARTS TO HURT WHEN I READ THESE FORUM MESSAGES. I DO NOT WANT TO KNOW WHAT IS IN A CAKE I JUST WANT TO EAT THE CAKE.
REALLY GUYS DO WE NEED A FORUM FOR BRAINS ARE US … SOME CAN SPELL, SOME CAN DO MATH (VERY WELL), SOME CAN MAKE BEER (ONE MEMBER VERY WELL) AND SOME OF US JUST LIKE TO FOLLOW THE MONEY AND HAVE SOME FUN. GOLLY GEE WIZ BATMAN THEY ARE GOING TO RUIN THIS SITE WITH ALL THIS MATH SCHOOLS OUT GUYS LETS KEEP IT SIMPLE.
OH AND FINALLY WHEN ALL YOU BRAINS WORK OUT THE PLAN TO GIVE US THE ANSWER TO NUMBER ONE … PLEASE JUST SUPPLY US THE ANSWER AND NOT THE WORK SHEETS ON HOW YOU GOT THE ANSWER. J.D. PASS ME THAT BOTTLE AND LET ME EASE MY SORE BRAIN CELLS. (OR AT LEAST NUM THE PAIN).
No problem Bankcollector here is your JD now make sure you share it with my name sake now ~ BIg Grin
