Since around 1:00am this morning till now over 1/2 inch H2O in the rain gauge that consists of SNOW. My Ques. is how to conv. the H2O amount to inches of snow melt and yes it still is snowing SO i have decided to strap on the ol super sliders and have some fun makin tracks behind the ski-doo.
Anyone out there wanna join me this summer??
I've found a website which says 10 inches (25.4 cm) of snow will melt into 1 inch (2.54 cm) of water.
Unbelievable! That ends my complaining about the inordinate amount of rain we received in the Maritimes this summer!
10 to 1 is the standard conversion of water equivalence for snow, but studies have shown that it really depends on the snow (you expected a SIMPLE answer from me? :) ). on the prairies, for example, we have a much drier snow, where 15:1 or higher may be appropriate whereas other places could use 6:1 - 8:1. most observers just let it melt and then measure it. :)
now… SOG (snow on the ground) is a whole 'nother kettle of fish… :)
SOG ?? doesn't wind take the moisture out of it??
So .. when it melts it almost dissappears??
All I know is I really don't want any of that white stuff yet!!!!! Today was a really nice day and I really hope we have another couple of months(fingers crossed) of good weather!!!!
LC: You're confusing melting with sublimation… directly from a solid state to a gas (vapour).
