IF WE WERE NOT SUCH A WONDERFUL WHY DOES EVERYONE WANT TO MOVE HERE. [sic]
"everyone"?! wow… talk about your sweeping generalization… :) let's see… 6,393,222,286 on earth, 31,946,316 of whom live in Canada (less than 1/2 of 1 percent). i'm reasonably certain that a fairly large proportion of the 6.4 odd billion people remaining are perfectly happy with their current address.
moderate, rational nationalism is a fine thing for unity. blinkered, fervent nationalism, history has proved, is dangerous. one must be mindful to which he adheres.
an aside… on the canadian flag, i see a red maple leaf. when you look out the window here in saskatchewan, how many red maples do you see? so, to whose icon of canada, exactly, are you clinging?

From the Laurentian Indian language of the Iroquoian language family. In 1535 two natives told French explorer Jacques Cartier how to find the kanata - settlement - prompting him to call the entire area Canada. Laurentian is now an extinct language.
Hmmm….
Whatever posting started this discussion seems to be missing.
As for red maples, they are everywhere in Eastern Canada so are certainly relevant for us, but I sure missed them when I lived in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. It is an interesting point that Rudy raised. What do you suggest would be a symbol that all Canadians could relate to?
Oh Otaku…..well said. I am now confined to a scooter when I go out and have removed my orange flag on the back to the Canadian Maple leaf and it suits me just fine. And as for myself since I am a Christian i would suggest that the bible is a symbol that all Canadians could relate to!!!!!! :-)
RUDYK … CANADA IS NOT ONLY MADE UP OF SASKATCHEWAN GET OUT OF YOUR IVORY TOWER IN REGINA SASKATCHEWAN AND VISIT ONTARIO AND QUEBEC AT THIS TIME OF THE YEAR AND SEE THE RED MAPLE LEAF.
closes eyes and covers ears to SAINT Rudy's suggestion…
DONT TELL US THE REASON!!!
LOL

I would suggest the snowflake. No matter how you drew it, as long as you had 6 points, you would always be right!
TOO FUNNY J-Lynn ROFLMAO……
I wouldn't limit it to a snowflake…I would say a snowdrift on a white background, and a shovel. We'll all be able to relate to that (unless the government wakes up and incorporates the Turks and Caicos islands into the country!)
J-Lynn get your mind out of the gutter!!
I initally thought of beaver as well. ( I also had my mind in the gutter, but it was a secondary thought )
A SNOWFLAKE is another good idea.
A Snowflake beside a shovel would be funny!!
And for Saskatchewan we can replace that prairie lily. (I think… has anyone actually SEEN one?)
And what should we replace it with?
The Gopher! (And to be correct, it should be a flattened gopher.)
i have prairie lilies growing wild here. my dogs use them to pee on. tons of them. want some bulbs??
I also have a couple in my back yard.
I don't think I've ever seen one. Must not grow this far north.
And isn't cutting them or digging them up illegal?

Only if you are taking them from crown land I was told. ie, no stealing them from the ditches. I see some on the highway up to PA, and I think I also saw them in the ditch by the highway up to LaRonge. I wasn't watching on the way up to Meadow Lake. I have never seen them in a ditch on the praries, those ditches are reserved for black eyed susans.
There used to be dozens of Prairie Lilies growing on my grandma's farm outside of Garrick,SK (and hundreds of Indian Paintbrushes, as well). And several people I knew in P.A. grew Prairie Lilies in their flower gardens. In my neighbourhood in Regina, there used to be some, but the new homeowners got rid of them.
