At least good old Tommy Douglas is the current leader.

Who the h*** is Tommy Douglas. Did I fall asleep in history class? I think Stompin' Tom or Neil Young should be in the top ten, if not on top. Oh well.

Sam Steele didn't even make the top 50!!!

He's more deserving that Don Cherry or Shania Twain.

An article in the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix a couple days ago mentioned that the 'fix is in' for the winner. The CBC has always been a friend to P.E.T. and vice versa, so he is going to be the winner, despite being hated everywhere west of Winnipeg!

You've never heard of TC Douglas?

Premier of Saskatchewan for 17 years? Founder of the CCF? Who first developed Medicare in Canada? Who gave Saskatchewan a Bill of Rights in 1946, a year before the UN and 30 years before the rest of Canada? Rural electrification? Kiefer Sutherland's grandfather?

Even my 13 year old knew who Tommy Douglas was - and he's not even vaguely interested in history!

Ah Pooga, you're too young to remember Trudeaumania! What an exciting time it was. Imagine having a Canadian prime minister who was cool! I know, I know, there was a lot more to the story than that!

As for my choice - I'll have to think about it for a bit. I am sorry this thread got pushed onto page 2. I really would like to hear what other CMTer's opinion is.

I was too young to vote back then, but I do remember it. I even remember being vaguely upset when he won the Liberal leadership. I was expecting Mitchell Sharp or Paul Martin (Sr.) to win.

As far as PET being cool, watch the TC Douglas repeat on Saturday. There is a clip from the leader's debate. Tommy makes PET look like a fool. And since Pierre was ex-NDP, he took credit for a lot of Tommy's ideas when he was PM.

I guess I'll end up voting for Pearson…at least he won the Nobel Peace prize…

not that i want to break up some good ol' shania-bashing, but she didn't make the top 10 so is ineligible for the title.

i find it telling that only one true scientist made the top 10. it's a popularity contest… largely for mercenaries, washed-ups and has-beens – call it "canadian idle". i also lament the lack of any of canada's VC winners being in the list. THOSE were(are) heroes.

in an accounting that's sure to tick off most readers at least once and perhaps 10 times, my cynical mood of the day presents, the top 10:

1. a collaborative reseacher who discovered something best attributed to a group
2. a scotsman who lived in new england but had a summer cottage in ontario(canadian… yeah, right…)
3. a high-collered jingoist who takes bombast to new heights
4. a socialist preacher who turned his back on saskatchewan when given the opportunity
5. a courageous idealist who would have been long forgotten had he not had the good fortune of dying young
6. a pencil-necked hockey player who STILL won't go into a corner
7. a drunk who, by the great canadian tradition of compromise, staggered into being our first prime minister
8. an ineffectual who took "compromise" onto the world stage and thus prolonged many a bloody conflict
9. a professor of genetics who found he was so inept at his job that he took up journalism and now tilts at windmills.
10. a brilliant but self-centred hypocrit whose only claim to greatness is that he p***ed off quebec more than he did western canada.

Well not really bashing her looks or talent… I just have a problem with someone that "calls" themself a Canadian and chooses to live in another country….

Now why would a scientist merit the title 'great' anymore than, say, a hockey player? :-)

Actually, had I thought of it earlier, I would have voted for "The Unknown Soldier". At the very least it would have been representative of all the military, from VC winners right to the neighbour's uncle, a D-Day Dodger, who died at Ortona.
