Utility rebate for Saskatchewan residents
Wed, Nov 17, 2004 06:33 PM CST

Premier Calvert suddenly feels like an Arab oil sheik with an extra billion dollars to burn.

LORNE CALVERT, PREMIER: "I was reminded this morning by another journalist on a radio program that it must feel good to be the premier of a have province and it does."

So good that the Premier wants to share the province's new found oil wealth with everyone.

LORNE CALVERT: "I am pleased to say we are doing that by
providing Saskatchewan families with a rebate of $137.00."

The government is keeping an election promise of giving
Saskatchewan residents the lowest annual utility rate bundle in Canada. Saskatchewan had been in second place behind Manitoba. The rebate will put us on top.

LORNE CALVERT: "Saskatchewan people own their crown
corporations and they receive many benefits from that
ownership. This rebate is one further benefit."

The rebate covers all utilities, power, natural gas, telephone and car insurance and will appear as a credit on December phone bills. That was the easiest way to do it. You won't have to pay your phone bill until the $137 credit is used up. The timing couldn't be better. It'll free up cash for Christmas shopping.

SHOPPER: "It will be a good thing. They should do it more
often."

That's the problem with rebates according to the Saskatchewan Party.

WAYNE ELHARD, MLA, SASKATCHEWAN PARTY: "The problem with this particular promise is that while it's relatively easy to keep it in terms of cash this year, what about next year and the year after and the year after."

This could be more than a one time rebate. The premier says his government will compare national utility rates annually to make sure Saskatchewan consumers are enjoying the lowest prices.

I think it's great…and a better method than that energy rebate the Feds gave out a couple years ago. With that one, my tenant, who didn't pay utilities, got a rebate, but I didn't!

As I recieve my internet and TV through Sasktel, it just feels better too!
