Pet Peeves

One of my pet peeves…

People who don't know the difference between "your" and "you're"!

your:
[Possess. Your ([=u]r) or Yours ([=u]rz); The pronoun of the second person, in the nominative, dative, and objective case, indicating the person or persons addressed. As in "your hat", "the hat is yours".

you're:
Abbreviation of "you are". As in "You're a hatmaker".

TPJ… i assume that you just wanted coffee in your recent experience with the drive through? perhaps there should be a "Coffee Only" line… call it the "Expresso Checkout" line. :) suggest it to tim horton's…

pooga…. it's a losing battle. :) i half expected you to choose "its" though! i don't run into "your" too much in essays since the first and second person perspectives are frowned upon, but i DO get "its" a lot (actually, i get "alot" a lot, too!)

since we're venting… the things that get my red pen going are wordy or redundant phrases…

"close proximity" – proximity means "closeness"… you would NOT say "close closeness"

"very unique", "somewhat unique", etc. – unique means "one of a kind"… it has no degrees. something is "one of a kind" or it isn't.

"very true" – ditto

"time period" – is there ANOTHER type of period (no comments from the women :) )

oh, and one from the cops they interview on TV… "the car was travelling at 'a high rate of speed'" – a rate of speed is an acceleration. fine, if they meant that the car was changing its velocity, but they usually are trying to say it was going fast. extra words that make them sound like they know what they are talking about but actually show the opposite.

oh… and one from george carlin… "preheat the oven". as he says, there are only two states an oven can be… heated and unheated. "pre" means nothing here… how do you heat it before you heat it? funny man… :)

antics

and while on that one rudy, you forgot "unthaw"
If you thaw something (and I don't mean a puddy tat)it means to un freeze so to speak. there is no such thing as unthaw. that would mean to not thaw.
and rudy there are more than 2 kinds of periods. and not just the women type. there is one at the end of a sentence and I don't mean jail sentence.

gouche92

And how about a "hot water heater"… Why does hot water need heating?? Or I will have to "unthaw" some meat… what does that mean they are going to refreeze it….. Hmmm I see antics already mentioned the unthaw thingy…..

My peeve is the use of the word(s) to, too, and two.

'Two' isn't used incorrectly too often, but the others are. 'Too' can be used to mean 'a greater extent', 'in addition', 'more than', and other ways.

'To' is generally direction, comparison, used alone if an infinitive is understood ("I meant to call but forgot to"), and other uses.

MasterRaistlin

people who call Pizza Hut and… (this, in reality, is an extremely long list but I'll choose my favs)

1) Don't know their home phone number or are stunned and say "ahh" for a few minutes….(didn't we all memorize this is like grade 1?)

2) Don't know where they are or don't have an address (If you're getting delivery and you don't know where you are….I can't exactly deliver a pizza there)

3) Ask "Do you have anything other than pizza?" (If you wanted something else why would you call a place called "Pizza Hut"? Oh..sorry..you're looking for "Anything Other Than Pizza" Hut….their number is…)

4) After taking their information and saying "what can I get for you this evening?" they say "oh…hold on a minute" and yell to the 50 people in the background "what do you guys want???" (as if this couldn't have been figured out ahead of time considering they didn't ask first about specials or prices or anything)

So yes….you name something really stupid someone could do or say…I've probably dealt with it in the service industry…LOL..we were talking about the above things at work today so that's why I felt compelled to post them.

See you folks at the gathering tomorrow and I'll see if I can think of a few more.

People who come into the store to buy something and it's as if it suddenly dawns on them the have to pay for it- then they open their purse or backpack, rummage around for their wallet, sort through all the receipts and little slips of paper with phone numbers on them from people they will never call, spend a couple more minutes deciding if it should be cash, debit, or charge card- all the while there is a line of people 6 deep and getting longer… if only they could have thought about this before they got to the till. After all, aren't they the ones who complained the service was so slow?

Joycer

People who say "I could care less" when they really should be saying "I couldn't car less" that one gets me every time.

People who say, "I could care less" when they really should be saying, "I couldn't care less". That one gets me every time. Oops, not sure of the puntuation… hope I'm not pet peeving someone else…LOL

antics

I get people come into the store here(used 2nd hand, antiques collectibles etc) and say whats new? once in awhile I do have something new that I got at a clearance centre etc like armour all for a buck a bottle. so if I have that and point I will point it out. I know that is not what they meant though but if you cant bug your regular customers………..

Give Me Money

Mine is when your in the express line and you have but one item and the person ahead of you is scrambling around in their pocket and/or change purse for the last 84 cents and takes 20 min. to do so instead of slappin a $5 or whatever down and recieve the change then asking the teller how much is it again!!

I have patience but please!!

shewolf

Give Me Money… I hear you but mine is close to yours as well… that express lane and the one that has to take a full cart thru it and the cashier that says nothing… grrrrrrrr

One of my pet peeves is the deliberate use of words spelled wrong and the use of backwards letters, especially in print ads for 'back to school' sales.
Another is when people only let the phone ring 3 times, then hang up. It's not like I sit by the phone all day, and, hey, not everyone has a cordless phone that they cart everywhere.

Pooga: I have patients

Your a doctor?</I>

I agree with Pooga, rudyk and the rest about spelling errors and grammar usage on the internet, or for that matter the newspaper. One that is on here often is "Congradulations". It is used frequently on graduation cards, but it is wrong, it is congratulations.

And one more especially for Saskatoon:

People who don't know that the little stick on the left side of the steering column is for turning on signal lights.

I have so many pet peeves its not eve funny!! Working in a restaurant in a small town gave me a lot of pet peeves. Because it is a small town…everyone knows the restaurant hours. MY BIGGEST PET PEEVE:
-When people phone and order food right before closing time even though they know it is closing time and they have had plenty of time to do it but didnt feel like it so they waited until just before closing time. GRRRNESS!!!!

JaketheDrifter

…people who have a "family reunion" in the aisle I'm trying to shop in at the grocery store

also, people who use 's to show the plural form of a noun
as in: "I went to the store and bought some apple's and some orange's."

The biggest peeve is when I see it in advertising. A company called Windshield Surgeons used to send coupons out in the mail all the time, refering to themselves as "Windshield Surgeon's" on their coupons and in all their ads. This went on for 2 or 3 years until someone finally clued them in and they corrected it.

And, for laughs (not really a peeve), Chinese Food menus. My favourite one is the "mouth-watered" wontons in the wonton soup. Mmmmmm…yummy.

I agree! Those do sound yummy……. NOT

Another peeve is the incorrect use of there, their and they're. I once saw an ad indicating a new product that had arrived in the store, with a simple message of "THERE HERE!"
