Wet Hit

I'm confused Pooga. Tignish and Alberton are tiny coastal communities in PEI. What is with the reference to oil rigs? I don't understand about the distance factor either. I believe they are separate communities.

If you click on the name of the town MapBlast shows that they are out in the ocean (hence Pooga's reference to oil rigs). If they are indeed separate communities they must be separated by "some" distance and not be right on top of one another or ZERO distance between them….

I see what you mean. The red star is out in the ocean, but the community names are on the coast. Does the red star indicate the exact location of the Hit? That would explain the zero distance. But are there oil rigs in that area? Could it be boats instead? Mind you, in the kind of weather we are getting here, I doubt that any boats are out.

I believe it is a case of MapBlast not having the correct coordinates for some of the Atlantic communities.

You are probably right. Many of those small communities seem to run into one another. It is difficult to know where one ends and the next one begins.

The reason for no distance is that the postal code database that dr uses on the site does not have the correct longitude and latitude values for these towns.

It is not Mapquest's fault because the link goes to longitude & latitude values, not the town name.

Alberton and Tignish have the same co-ordinates as:
Port Borden
Ellerslie
Slemon Park
Albany
These are just the ones I found, who knows how many others. There is another co-ordinate that I found was used for three or four towns, so there may be more problems with the database.

I know PEI is small but these co-ordinates are wrong. Especially when you can see Alberton and Tignish on the Mapquest map.

When you look at the scale of the map to see 'Tignish', it is apparent it is likely just a crossroads, perhaps with a geographic feature, like a church. I think bdkingston is right, there are many 'communities' in the area that share postal codes.

For a more local example, go to Saskatoon at mapquest, and look for 'Grasswood' and 'Newcross' on the 1-mile scale. They are on the map, but have you ever seen them as distinct towns?

Postal codes:
C0B 1A0 Albany
C0B 1B0 Alberton
C0B 1J0 Ellerslie
C0B 1X0 Port Borden
C0B 2A0 Slemon Park
C0B 2B0 Tignish

All gave Latitude 46.6587 Longitude -63.1142.

Maybe all the rural postal codes are wrong, so that there is one map location for C0A and one for C0B, etc. just like for cities (S7K, S7N,..).

I do believe that is how the database is set up, just the first three letters and not the last three, so all those communities would show up as being in the same place
