I sorta gave up marking bills. Ill tell you why. Shortly after I started I got a call from my bank after I paid a bill with marked money. I tried to explain it to her and just gave up telling her fine, I wont do it again and I havent when I have to pay money to that bank.
My mom is very ill and Ive been taking care of her bills etc. She gave me cash to pay her Visa so I went to her bank to pay the bill. Well the teller called over the manager and blah blah blah got another lecture. I guess what Ive learned is, dont bring marked money to the banks? I still want to mark bills but now every time I do I worry someone is going to yell at me or something.
So today I thought I would stop in, say hi and see what you all thought.
I have a brand new stamp that is hardly used, I want to use it :)
USE IT but avoid taking money to the tellers at the bank. Some of them can be downright rude and obnoxious. Based on my experiences very few business people will ever give you a hard time about paying for their product/services with marked bills.
Stamp away…. :o)
Or… raise h**l! Who do these people think they are anyway! I've found the 'in your face' approach works well. Some banks are used to intimidating their customers, and they'll do it until you stand up to them. Remember, theirs is a business the same as any other- if they give crappy service, the customers should tell them so. If you are non-confrontational by nature, change banks, but don't do it without telling them why they lost a customer.
I would change banks as well and get to know the tellers at the new bank. I got to know the tellers at my bank so I know they won't give me a hard time if I were to give them marked bills. I also take my little boy with me so the female tellers are to busy ooowing over him to notice any marked bills. :)
Go to the bills and FAq'S section and print a copy of the letter from The Bank Of Canada..Show that to them and let them know if they continue to harass you, you will take your business elsewhere…
go to said bank. ask for cash. go absolutely nuts over the ink that has been sloppily stamped on any notes by uncareful tellers. refuse any banknote that has the slightest imperfection (tears, writing, etc). or if this "subtle" approach doesn't work… tell us what branch it is and we'll form a CMT posse. :)
I know this isn't the prefered method, but you can still track the money without stamping it. It's just a lot harder to get a hit. There have been a number of Stealth bills hit on this site. Maybe you could talk to "honeybabe" the other Thunder Bay user and see which bank they use. He/She doesn't seem to be slowing down for anything.
Magenta they may tell you not to do this to the bills but they can not refuse your bills and if they do suggest that you will go to another bank and do your dealing with them. I will tell you what the bank will say. No sorry we want you keep your account here. Even go so far as to explain to them the bank defaces these long before you get them in your hands….Banks have a big old red or blue stamp that is put on the top of maybe 100 20dollar bills and also I have watched as a bank attendant has put a number in the corner of the bill to denote the number of bills remaining in that bundle of bills. Now go ahead and mention that to the banker…after i have said this to you…….you can ask some of the members here about what i have just told you….but my opinion is keep on marking bills and spending them…. I am so sorry to hear that your mom is not well and magenta I am praying for her safe and steady recovery….
Oh rudyk i love your solution…CMT posse works for me. You know I was putting about 3000 dollars to open an account and since I am handicapped the manager of the bank of Nova Scotia came to me and got me signed up for a new account. I gave the funds to him in cash all marked and he asked me what was that all about so I told him. He asked me if I get paid by this club and I told him no it is a bunch of people interested in tracking bills that they have marked to see where that bill goes. To make a long story short….my first hit was from Andrew…the bank manager in Langley….to funny.. I know this because I asked Andrew next time in the bank. I asked him please don't enter a bunch of bill or I would not get credit for the entries and he laughed and told me he would not be doing anymore of that since he is too busy doing the banking business…he said he got the bill at teller machine…LOL
CMT posse sounds awesome! Find a bank that is giving people a hard time about marked bills and one day just storm it with them! People would come in at various times of the day and exchange their fives for 20's or vice-versa. LOL…I would love to see the looks on their faces. "Don't mess with the family…." ROFL…..j/k of course…no threat intended to any bank or bank employees.
I'd be happy to take any enhanced bills you have and open you an account…
with today's technology, you can do all your banking via internet… and deposit via ATM all your money…
Get ahold of me.. I'll open you an account LOL
Just cause tellers work at A bank doesn't mean they know the LAW.
As several people in the past have said print out a copy of the letter from the Bank of Canada we have on the web site.
I personally let any bank teller who says anything know.. Just cause they are A BANK TELLER, it doesn't mean THEY own the Currency & the Laws concerning it. I furthermore inform them BEFORE they give anyone else heck .. Maybe they should check out the site on the bill, Just cause they think they know the law, doesn't mean they do.
I've had a small handfull of tellers..
All female and from Bank of Montreal who think they are the queen themselves.
I also deal with Royal Bank. None of any of the tellers there have said anything negative.
A couple people asked if I stamped it, to which I said Yes.
A couple have also asked about the site. to which i tell people it is about tracking your money over the intrernet, Tell them obviously not everyone enters the money, but it is fun to see where a bill will go.
Thanks for all the great ideas. I love the CMT posseLOL
I wonder, I should mail the letter from the bank of Canada to a few banks just for the heck of it.
Ill start to stamp again but I might stay clear of the bank tellers for a while.
I really like this site and the people. I dont want to stay away so I think that Ill just tell the tellers where to go and how to get there next time, if there is a next time.
Thanks for the replies everyone, restored my confidance :)
I actually got some business card stock and made up little cards that I can pass out to folks who give me a hard time. If you want, I'll share what's on it by Private Mail.
Oh Please do, I would like that.
send it to itsmagenta at gmail.com
(at=@) gotta stop those spiders :)
I would do as everyone says and just find another bank or print the letter mentioned and take it to the bank. I personally took 1000 in marked bills to the TD bank one day and not a word was said. It was 900 in marked 20's and 1 100 dollar bill.
I have taken bills into the bank and had tellers ask about the stamps on them, but have never been given a hard time about it. One teller asked if it was illegal so told her about the letter from bank of canada and she accepted my explanation…no problem!
If I'm paying a bill at the bank, I'll usually only stamp the backs of the bills. The tellers rarely ever notice and I've only had trouble one time at a TD. The teller accepted the bills and said she was immediately sending them to be destroyed. I just smiled at her. And got hits on those bills.
"The tellers rarely ever notice"
funny 'cuz when I am counting cash, I usually count them face down (looking at the back)… But I am looking to see if there are any stamps in the back, or at the serial number!
Then I will put them face up in my till.
I think Ill just stay clear of the banks for a while. I could be stamping so much money through work but I dont want to cause any kind of problems at work with the bank.
The other worry I have (I worry too much) is I would not want to get into a disagreement with a bank and have it reflect on this site. So much hard work has gone into the site and I sure dont want to see any bad publicity.
Im going to go stamp whats in my purse now and get back on track :) thanks everyone, made me feel better hearing your thoughts and ideas.
