URL survey

Now that I have the site running on the new server, I want to modify the configuration of the site such that everyone who surfs the site, does so using a common URL (address). There are several reasons I want to do this. The most noticeable reason is that when someone posts an internal link to another bill sometimes it requires logging in again to view it; that's because you are viewing the site via www.cdn-money.com and the link points to www.cdn-money.ca … even though both URLs point to the same server, as far as your browser is concerned they are two different sites.

In any case, both URLs will always continue to work, but will simply "forward" to a common URL. So, that begs the question, dot-CA or dot-COM?

Or maybe all the URLs should forward to a new URL, such as wheretheheckhasmyhardearnedmoneybeen.ca …

Please, give me your thoughts and then as a group we'll make a decision.

I think .com has a higher recognition still among casual to medium internet users (who are probably the higher population also)

As long as both URL adresses are still accepted I dont really mind. All my stamps say .com I use .com

COM works for me.

LOL dr thats a good one but a little long. I prefer .com since thats what brought me here in the first place and its what I'm used to. Thx for the opportunity to voice my opinion.

I agree with BANKCOLLECTOR that .ca should be used, being as we are all proud Canadians. The .com means that it is a commercial site, meaning that it is a business. We only track money not make it (Unless you count Jake's moneytree!). I would prefer .org or .info instead of .com.

The forwarding to a common URL would be good because when posting links some people use .com others .ca and some don't use the www.

I vote for www.cdn-money.ca (even though my stamps say .com) or wheredidallmymoneygo.info.

Give Me Money

In reply to Dr.'s survey i certainly prefer .ca over .com However, since everyone usually asks .com (for simple reason it is most common) when asked for any address. But, as a proud Canadian as I'am I wouldn't mind seeing .ca
All in all though it doesn't really matter I'am in for what ever is decided.

as a pround canadian, i say .com

it's far more widely recognized and the site name ALREADY has "cdn" in it.

COM for this tracker, and I am still a proud canadian. Why? Because people like to enter .com at the end of any url even if its wrong. We are more likely to get a hit that way. Most browsers do not require the www. so we could drop that.

cdn-money.com

As a frequent internet user I use the [CTRL] + [ENTER] shortcut with cdn-money in the address bar which automatically puts the www. prefix and .com suffix on to whatever is typed into the address bar.

As for forwarding to a different URL, sure if it makes things easier for DR.

I have used both but finally settled with .ca for my stamps, I find the bills with .ca have gotten more of a response :)

The only problem with using .CA over .COM (as I see it anyway) is the fact that most users have their stamps made out with .COM.

My vote would be for the .COM as the main one….

Just a reminder that BOTH domain extensions would continue to work; it's just that they would be forwarded to one or the other.

BANKCOLLECTOR

Thank you DR. for repointing that out i was just going to say that. I have stamps with both com and .CA on them. Yes com is very common but you would very seldom see an American use .CA unless it was a site dedicated to their Canadian customers. Remember we are a Canadian site tracking Canadian money in Canada only so .CA would seem logical for a Canadian site. If someone entered .com they would not vanish into thin air they would still reach our site as DR. had the insight and savy to claim both .CA and .com for domain use. .CA is the way to go.
See Proud Canadian message in General Forum for more on this.

DR, I think that since this does not affect operation of the website that you should decide or just ask for a simple vote .com or .ca in a forum over x number of days and use the results for the decision. If you start asking people what they think these replies get very lengthy. A simple .com or .ca in the subject line should do.

My vote is for .com because when I first entered marked bills here that's what I saw. I never entered any bills that said .ca because I thought it was a different site. I also never entered any bills from the other 2 sites.
