Getting an old five or ten is always fun, but I think sometimes we forget how long we’ve had the loonie and the toonie. My daughter (11 years old) and I were at an antiques show, and when she saw the paper dollars she asked what it was. It had never occurred to me that she had only ever used coins. I remember my father would give me a two new one dollar bills every Saturday when I was her age as my allowance.

And I remember getting a dime when I was younger than her. When I was her age I think I received 50 cents. But then, a chocolate bar only cost 12 cents…

My mom used to give me 50 cents and my brother and sister and I would go to the store, bring her back her cigarettes, and each of us got a small brown paper bag full of candy. cigarettes were 35 cents then.

I used to get a quarter as well. Never really saw it, though. Every Saturday my mom would take us to the library and on the way home, we went past a 7-11. My quarter went directly to the purchase of a Slurpee.

I got a big raise when I turned ten. Before that I would get 50 cents a week. I remember spending 20 cents on an O Henry Bar. I think I got the big raise, because I liked to go to the movies, and it was $1.50 for the Saturday mantinee.

My father told me that when he was my age he delivered news papers and got paid 35 cents every two weeks. Mind you this was during WW II, and he told me he could go to the movies for a dime.
