This site must be run by someone from the western or praire provinces, because no one in Ontario or Quebec refers to themselves as East.

1) It's just a designation for the location of the province in the country.
2) I'm from Saskatchewan and consider myself West, and was in west, years ago, but we got evicted (don't ask) and thus the central forum was formed.
3) Calling that forum Center of the Known Universe would be presumptuous ;-)
LOL! That's so true, but I'm not from Toronto. My mother is from Saskatoon, and she said it was called the West. I guess its all in the where you are. I have a friend from PEI, that says the West starts at the border between NB and Quebec.
I think CJ was trying to say that we users in Saskatchewan almost needed a forum section for ourselves…….I think we may have overpowered the "West" so to speak.
And when I joined the site, Saskatchewan was already listed as a "Central Province" so this happened before my time, so when I say "we" and "ourselves", I'm speaking for all of Saskatchewan, not just me!
If I may speak for all of Saskatchewan!
Saskatoon blood??? No wonder you've been attracted to this site!
And from Ottawa? Should have Sarge comment on that. He used to live there and mentioned that he attended a University of Saskatchewan Alumni party there. He expected a few dozen people, and ended up seeing a few hundred! Hey Sarge, what did you say that the membership was like there… a few thousand registered UofS alumni??
And when I ask someone from Ontario if they've ever been out West, they'll say "I've been to Winnipeg." Heck, Winnipeg is about as east as you can get in The West!! LOL!
Usually Ontario & Quebec people I met would say something like "From Saskatchewan? It's pretty flat out there, isn't it?"
I would usually respond with "Well, it sure beats 3,000 miles of pre-cambrian f*****g rocks!"
My apologies now for the above astericked(?) word, but I used it to get my point across when I was there.
It's true, there are a lot of rocks in Ontario and Quebec. MInd you in the St Lawerence river valley its pretty flat.
The pre-cambrian shield is one of the most beautiful sites in the fall. More colours than you can image.
As for being out "West". I've been all the way to Victoria. :)

Did you drive across the prairies, or fly over? :-)
Sarge and I grew up in Sudbury. We are familiar with 'rock'. But before the Superstack was built, there were no colours. That's because there was no vegetation!

Pooga, I've done both. My Grandmother retired to Victoria.
I grew up just up the road from you and Sarge. I'm from the Sault. If you want to see great colours just take the tour train from the Sault. Its beautiful.
During the 6 years I was in the Regular Forces, I spent most of my time in Ontario and some in Quebec. I made the round trip from eastern Ontario to Saskatchewan by road at least 4 times, once in winter at Christmastime - and was stranded in Marquette Michigan for 12 hrs because of a blizzard.

one thing that attracted me to this site immediately was dr 's knowledge of geography. that he didn't call saskatchewan and manitoba "west" is perceptive (one of my first posts). the centre of canada lies within this region… indeed, the centre of north america (even with it's various definitions) is here.
(sorry for the tardy response to this thread… just found it)
Hi rudyk,
When I learned Canadian Geography in elementary school (mind you that is a LONG time ago) the country was broken down like this:
Atlantic Provinces: Newfoundland, PEI, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick
Maritime Provinces: PEI, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick does not include Newfoundland.
Central: Quebec, and Ontario
Prairie: Manitoba, Saskatchewan
Western: Alberta, BC
North: NWT, Yukon, Nunavut (well not Nunavut as it didnt exist)
I agree that Saskatchewan and Manitoba are in the middle of North America, isnt Winnipeg close to the center of Canada?
