Anyone ever see them?
I havent :'(
Never? And you're Canadian??
Come to the Prairies. Almost every night, May to July.
I guess living in Canada's best city does have its drawbacks :D
I see them a lot here in Lebret. caused by hot and cold air currents colliding. and they do respond to noise. especially whistles.
Had a totaly awesome show of the lights here in Meaford last November. Lasted about four hours. Streaks of white, red and green swirling through the entire sky.All againest a stary background. This was one of the best show of the lights I have ever seen. We get the odd small showing lasting a few minutes, but this one time was amazing.
We occasionally get them in Regina, usually green or pink. I grew up in Prince Albert and saw them through most of the year in a multitude of colours.
When my hubby, daughter, and I drove up to P.A. this past mid-November, they were across the entire northern sky. We saw them the brightest from just north of Saskatoon to just north of McDowell.
When I was growing up, my father used to tell of the time when he and his brothers were kids and took a white sheet outside during a display of the Northern Lights. As they whooped and waved the sheet around, the lights became quite active and lowered in the sky…. to the point where they thought the lights were going to get them and they ran inside!
Interesting story mesmerize.
In any city you don't really see the Northern lights like you do out of town or say on a deserted hiway.
Even driving from Calgary -> Regina several times You see amazing light shows.
Even stars are much nicer when you leave the comfort of the city.
I am not really any kind of astronomer, but one of the advantages of driving at night is seeing all the stars, Most of which you don't see when you are in the city.
Another Note.. when I was younger I would ride my bike 5 - 10 minutes north of regina sometimes & lay down & gaze into the sky.
Having grown up on the northern most outskirts of Regina makes it easier to do.
On a nice summer day it is kinda romantic to take a little drive even.
all it takes is 5 - 10 minutes out of the city.. you will see the glare of the city & realize why you wouldn't see all the stars & full effects of the Northern Lights.
I have never seen colors, just white.
I've only seen colors a couple times.. I think that happens when they are extreme & have alot of chemical in them. such as during harvest & seeding..
1 time as I was riding my mountain bike home from work I remember the Northern lights being pretty extravagent & colourful.
I was lucky they lasted about an hour.. It normally took me about 20 minutes to ride home. I just continued out of the city. They seemed to loose color out of the city, but they were brighter & dancing around more.
Just checked out the first site. As I was viewing the slide show, hubby took a look over my shoulder and saw the Northern Lights with the rings and reminded me we had seen rings in the set we saw when we went to P.A.
