BDKINGSTON

I hope that any further donations will be seperate as this group and their portions were set when they entered this group..

ANGLOFROG

I guess we could pay in advance for X number of draws, I just barely manage to make the deadline for the next draw, Quebec to Saskatchewan in 3 days.

When we win, how am I supposed to buy a car with stamped bundles and expect all bills to stay in circulation?

Idjit

Picture this in your mind: you've just won 24 million bucks and you are looking out your front window at the rusted out heap you call a car; taking the plane is a definite option, now, right?

CalamityJanet

If you won $24 million or a portion of, where would you be in a hurry to get to (same continent wise)?

Think of all the places you have seen that you wouldn't from a plane. Yes, get a gas guzzling luxo cruiser so you can travel in comfort and style, but don't knock driving. Stop at all the points of interest and if a place looks interesting, you have all the time in the world to hang out :)

ps. yes I am born and bred in Saskatchewan, flat is where its at, but I DO NOT VOTE NDP !!

Now quit distracting me, I have to get over to your place to drop off some more investment money ;)

ANGLOFROG

HA HA HA ! By getting to Saskatchewan in 3 days I meant mailing my contributions, but in terms of winning I'll be there in 3 hours even if I had to fly the plane myself.

Yes the Tempo has got to go, but not yet, maybe I'd drive it to Toronto or search Canada for the best price ???? and drop it off there. There is a lot more of this country I'd like to see by car, old neighborhoods I grew up in, New Westminister, Port Coquitlam, Ponoka, Edmonton, southern Ontario… I once drove from BC to Quebec in 4 days and was sorry I didn't spend more time on the road. Driving thru the coastal mountains by night is like having sex blindfolded, feels great but you miss out on a lot!

Sarge

And just think - driving coast to coast, staying in motels and hotels, buying souveniers and gifts, buying your meals - all with marked $5 bills. ;-)

Serotonin

Depends on your partner. I recall days of my youth when being blinded by drink was a blessing. Has anyone gone by rail across this great country? That's one trip I would like to do.

Idjit

I had a Tempo once; it was a love-hate relationship. Wait, no, more like a hate-hate relationship. I hated that car, and I think it hated me too.

Serotonin: I have always wanted to cross Canada by train. When we were dating, my wife lived in Melville, and I would visit by train every other weekend or so. It was a hoot, but the tracks on that line were pretty bumpy.

ANGLOFROG

My car, it knows I can't do without it so it goes no matter what's falling off next. Add to that Montreal's pot-holed bumpy highways and you've got the equivalent of a chuckwagon.

In my college days I used to go home a lot to Toronto from Sarnia, interesting 4 hour ride. Crossing Canada would be a lot safer than driving, I guess there's always hitchiking!

I've made the round trip once from S'toon to Kamloops. I love the train. I'd do that before flying or driving anyday. You can see SOOOOOOOOOOO much on a train. Huge windows to look out of (bigger than STC or Greyhound bus), and the neat part is that in many places, especially in the west, the train travels by itself, so you don't see gobs of cars and trucks zooming around on a big stinky highway. Not like one can smell the highway from the train, but you get my point.

The downer is not having the best service from Saskatoon. Meaning, the train only comes and goes every three days or so, and in the wee hours of the morning at that. So, a person would miss seeing most of Saskatchewan either way, since it'll be dark. Blah.

Smooth ride, though. Friendly conducters. Sadly, they still had a smoking car, and we had to pass through it to get to the observation car, and to buy something at the canteen. Uck.

Nice and quiet, too, the train was. I'd love to take it again somewhere…

kaiser

After my dad left school he hitchhiked from Vancouver to Calgary in less than 40 hours.

ANGLOFROG

I never had the nerve to stick my thumb out, driving across in a one-ton truck, sleeping in the truck every other day and motels for proper sleep and shower.

BTW I have a videotape that ViaRail put out some time ago of a cross country train ride from Victoria to Newfoundland.

Pooga

I remember as a kid (early 60s) taking the 'Canadian' from Sudbury to Fort William (now Thunder Bay). The north shore of Lake Superior is forever etched in my mind. In those days you could go up to the dome car any time you wanted.

I also barely remember a trip in the mid 70s from Saskatoon to Winnipeg and back. It was in January, an evening/overnight trip both ways. Really didn't see anything. Mind you, that may have been because we spent most of the trip in the club car! My first experience with canned beer. It wasn't available in Saskatchewan (not until 1988 in fact!).

My wife grew up on the trains. Her father and 3 uncles all worked for CN for more than 30 years. She fondly remembers an early summer trip from Saskatoon to Churchill to see the polar bears.

Sarge

Along with the trips Pooga mentions - which I was the kid brother tagging along everywhere, I've also taken VIA from Ottawa to Halifax, and the train was stranded in Riviere du Loup for four hours after an engine broke down. There was also a round trip I took by AMTRACK between Minot ND and Chicago. That was a great trip!

Serotonin

I've never been on a train in Canada except two years ago, Toronto to Ottawa. Europe and Africa are another story. The nice things about trains as mentioned is the apparent isolation, away from highways and cars. I think Amtrack has a good reputation. Never been on it though. With air fares going up, that $3000 ticket by train across Canada may seem like a bargain before too long.

HOGGS

Calgary to Regina overnight 20 years ago didn't sleep at all. All I heard all night was click click click ding ding ding .When the train stopped in Moose Jaw for 1 hour I had a cat nap

ANGLOFROG

"If we win the Lotto, how about renting the train for a week for a big party?"

I think that's a great idea!
