For those of you who care, the site is now running on a new machine. I tell you this as you may notice some hickups… pages not working, whole site not working, etc… if you do, please email me with the details right away.
And if you want the details on the machine, here's the scoop:

Pentium III 1 GHz machine
512 MB RAM
2 x 20 GB HD running RAID 1 (mirroring)
Red Hat Linux 7.1
Apache webserver 1.3.20
Tomcat 3.2.3 servlet engine

Speaking of hard drive size….. I don't imagine that the record for each bill is all that big. What is it??? 5 or 6 fields? 5-10k??? But theoretically, how many bills can your database hold?

Umm, well it's a little hard to pin an exact number as the database is highly normalized, meaning that, for example, rather than storing the location details (city name, province, etc) with each bill's record, only a link to the location table is stored.
The way the DB is laid out, for each bill entered there is an entry in the "bill" table and an entry in the "initial entry" table. The "bill" table contains three numbers (4 bytes per number) for an id number, series, and denomination and a field for the serial number (10 bytes). So that 22 bytes. The "initial entry" table for that bill contains 5 numbers, 2 dates (8 bytes for one, 4 for the other) and a comments field of 250 bytes. So that's 282 bytes. So between the two tables that's 304 bytes. Some math gives me 55,158,608 records could fit into the remaining ~15GB on the hard drives (the OS and apps and such takes up ~5 GB). Each "hit" is the same size as the initial entry table, but doesn't require another entry in the bill table since the bill is already there. Of course, the DB would hold less bills if each bill was entered at a separte location as then there would have to be another entry in the location table. But I think were safe, though… I did another quick calculation and came up with the following: in order to fill up the database within a year, we would have to enter 2 bills per second, every second for the entire year. So, as I said, we're probably okay… for now. :)
