I'm sorry to still be on this, but I think my fellow geo-nerds out there will appreciate the utter fascination that is google maps. Can you imagine if it were actually world-wide? I'd never work, eat or sleep.
Anyway, my latest 'conquest' was finding the giant radio telescope at Arecibo. The image isn't super good, and I wish you could zoom in more, but it's pretty unmistakable once you find it!
I spent about an hour trying to find the Very Large Array in New Mexico and never did manage to spot it. I think the image quality just isn't good enough.
Anyone else have any hard to find spots/landmarks that they managed to find??
I've spent a bit of time playing with the Google maps myself.
If it get too time consuming might have to start a support group for it.
Support group… need one… soonest!
Latest finds..
Imperial Valley,CA…. amazing views around the Salton Sea
Mississippi trip… an hour from the mouth to St. Paul, got too small after that!
Palm Springs, CA… The number of golf courses!!!
VLA, New Mexico… Not that easy to see
O'hare Airport… Talk about big!
Denver International… The plane!
And Sarge had a real neat one showing where the underground nuclear tests were done. Lots of surface features!
I'm sorry I can't really say I care that much. It was neat for 1/2 hour or so.. :) but all those who love the site.. :) I am happy for you!!
I will say it is neat seeing all these sites you Geo nerds point out though.
Can anyone find london bridge?
:) hey pooga you got that pretty quick. Was kinda a trick question I knew it was in Arizona.. I believe it is the largest structure to ever be moved.
I guess you can't fool an old Master!!
I bow!
I have been spending an awful lot of time on this as well. got a cousin good. phoned him cause he was home in Montana after going to Washington. saw his van in the driveway. he came back early. why are some parts so blurry or not showing at all and right beside them as clear as clear can be? I thought maybe cloud cover but it is not
I looked up the town I grew up in and you could zoom right in. I could pick out my brother's house with no problem. Then I decided to try and find a friends house in Calgary. Couldn't even get close.
Here's another interesting one. At the center is the USS Yorktown, a WW2 vintage aircraft carrier, now a museum in Charleston, S.C. I tried all the navy yards I could think of, but couldn't find a current carrier.
uss Yorktown
Any yet another…Mt Saint Helen's in Washington. Try zooming in for more detail.
Mt St Helens
To answer your question(s) about why some areas are clear and other are not…it's the image quality. Some images are more recent and are more clear and also more detailed. Other images don't have the resolution and/or are older. Make sense?
I forgot about Mt. St. Helens…I'm off to take a look!!!
have you looked at
Fort 1 Fort 2
Hoover Dam
Golden Gate Bridge
Fort McHenry (Where 'Stars & Stripes' was written)
Concorde on ground at JFK?
Skydome and CN Tower
Another interesting thing has been seeing high image quality in an area except for what I really wanted to see, such as part of West Point and the New London Sub Base.
Thanks for the site, I'm going to try and find the general area where I live.
Take a look at the Air Base at Minot, ND. You can see several B-52s on the runway.
And then there are all the dams along the Missouri.
Such as Fort Peck. And if you upstream a bit, the wide Missouri turns into a trickle.
And of course, you can find crop circles everywhere! (Irrigation)
I can acually find my house, not perfect but I know it's my house.
I managed to find the White House and the Parliment Buildings in Ottawa.
Antics, that is just too funny!
I spent a bit of time trying to find the Hollywood sign, but not luck. Anybody else able to find it?
Address is 2620 North Beachwood Drive, Hollywood California 90068. It's the darker green area to the right of that roadway.
