update

Well here's my late-week update on the new version…

  1. Some Bitonic business stuff has come up so it looks like things might not happen with the new version until sometime after the weekend.

  2. The postal code data arrived today. Yay! I managed to not only find a cheaper source for the data but also a Canadian company. How great is that? In the end, the cost is a little over $300 and I collected close to $200 leaving me only $100 to cover myself. So thanks to everyone who donated.

So if anyone is looking for data of some kind or another relating to PC's, lat/longs, any kind of data processing, or whatever, check out Infinite Gravity Inc.

  1. In terms of the new version, the only major functions left are the adding of bills using the new postal code system and the automation of things like the weekly report and user level updates and such. I'm hoping to have that done over the weekend, so I can do the final testing and then deploy early next week.

  2. I am going to leave the postal code system available for everyone to see for a couple of weeks and then if those who donated want, I will either turn the within-city distances off for non-donators. Or, alternatively, I can reward you in some other way, maybe with access to special things like hit heaven and such. I'm inclined to let everyone see the distances since the data was much cheaper than originally thought. But I leave the final decision up to you.

  3. When I do the transition, the site will be down for several hours at best and perhaps as long as a couple of days while I convert all the data to the new system. I was going to try and leave the system up but I think in order to make things fastest and easiest, I will simply put up a "down for maintenance" page. Sorry gang.

I think that's it.

  1. You gotta eat, so business first.

  2. Fantastic! How did you find them?

  3. Don't rush. Might as well deploy with as few bugs as possible.

  4. I have no desire for a 'two class' system on the website. A double standard favouring donators is a questionable strategy. Great for those there, but possibly annoying for those on the outside.

  5. Best off to take it right down for all the time you need. When you mention on the replacement page the estimated downtime, add 25%, just in case!

I agree with Pooga, equality for all is best. Pretty tough
to explain why there is a two-tier system two years down the road…
Regarding downtime: it's summertime!- better add 70% to estimate…

Well, it was my plan tonly have the two-tier system for a year. Regardless, I would like to reward donators in some way. I'll have to do some thinking.

As for your question about the data, Pooga, it's good. The data only has lat/longs for the FSA level (first 3 chars) for urban postal codes so 'T3G 1E3' and 'T3G 2L9' both have the same lat/long. Though in most cases that's okay, as the lat/long is in the general area. However, that being said, I built a system that allows me to override the lat/long for a specific urban postal code. So for my home PC, I have it on my exact house location. So, if anyone has a GPS (or access to one) I will accept lat/longs for your exact postal code. Make sense? How's that for a long answer to a short question? :)

I have a suggestion for the next update. The curosr is automatically placed in the serial feild on the add bill page.

I want an easy link I can type in just to get to the login screen, something like cdn-money.com/log That way I skip the somewhat slow front page, and don't have to click the login link… Just an idea…

That way I skip the somewhat slow front page

The front page is much faster in the new version.

Doesn't seem right you are 'out of pocket' $100./ What if everyone in the top 30 sends 3-5 dollars?

dr

Nah, it's all good. But thanks for the offer. Anyone who has already donated should not send anymore.

ANGLOFROG

Did you donate, Serotonin?

I think the donation system was fair enough, pooh to all who didn't donate and dr should be lucky it's not costing him more.

And yes, I did donate.

cbrkeir

I always said I would donate, but lately I have been so poor, I cant even rent a damn movie at Blockbuster.

kaiser

I found out that I'm not moving so when I get the cash I'll donate. How much should I send and how?
