It's just numbers people put on bundles of bills to remind them when they make deposits. When I do up a deposit, I bundle the twenties in 50, and there is always a remainder- say 22 20's. I will write this on the top bill so when I add up the cash I don't mistake it for a 50-bundle.
Some of the funny stuff I see on bills: flower stamps, bank stamps from people who say stamping bills is illegal, phone numbers, etc. The best so far is a $1 bill that was a first prize for the biggest fish. There were the names of the guys involved, and the weight of the winning fish. The way I got the bill suggested to me that it might be stolen, so with the help of the internet, I tracked some of the guys down (they were from Nfld), and asked them about the bill. One of them wrote me a note, thanking me for my trouble, and for reminding them of a fishing trip long ago, and said to keep the bill and sent me $5 for my trouble.

That was a brilliant reply Ben. I'd actually often wondered that myself, but never thought to ask.

My friends DAD works at a bank.. He says that they usually put it on to say how many bills × 10 there is in a stack of counted.. so number 5 should be 50..

Thats how the Royal bank here in Calgary does it I guess
