Census 2006

Being a genealogist, there is a question on the census to which I am hoping everyone is going to answer yes, or at least everyone who doesn't really care if their information is ever made available to the public.

Please mark your census so that is will be available to historians and
researchers 92 years from now. You won't be around to complain of
invasion of privacy.

The Statistics Act guarantees the confidentiality of your census information. Only if you mark "YES" to this question will your personal information be made public, 92 years after the 2006 Census.
If you mark "NO"or leave the answer blank*, your personal information will never be made publicly available.

Does this person agree to make his/her 2006 Census information available for public release in 2098 (92 years after the census)?

 Yes No

Inclusion of this 'informed consent' provision in Censuses to be conducted from 2006 was the price forced upon genealogists and historians seeking to regain public access to Historic Census records to which existing legislation already stated we were entitled. We had been advised that unless this provision was accepted the government would not present the Bill (S-18) to end our seven-year campaign to regain public access to Historic Census records in accordance with provisions of the Access to Information and Privacy Acts.

Yup, I marked mine with "Yes". I think it might be interesting in the future plus I won't be around anymore, so nobody can bother me.

wetboy100

count me out. I'll mark "no". I don't trust the goverment.
why WOULD I trust any government ?

I ran into trouble with the census of 1986 - I got the long form and put my nationality as Canadian - got a reply back asking me to identify which Indian Tribe I was part of - I replied I was not of native descent but both my parents and grandparents were all born in Canada so I was Canadian - They replied I had to disclose my "Ancestry" or face up to 10 years in prison or a $30,000 dollar fine. Gotta love Canada

Lord_Comedy

Well this time they never ask me any of that info..
All that was asked was are we farmers & how many people people lived in the house. The second person had to answer weather they were married children, room mate, etc.
That is all there was on mine so I said they could share the info in 92 or 96 years whatever it was.
As for your problem in 86 pukpukg They probably had a few people with the same problem so they quit asking "Ancestry"

pukpukg

I should clarify I had the LOOOONNNNNGGGGG form

They asked health questions, employment questions, hobbies, volunteer activities, kind of cars owned - how many pets etc etc etc etc - it was pages and pages and pages of ^$&$&^$^#@

As an archivist and one time genealogist, I encourage you to mark the box allowing the information to be transferred to the National Archives and released in 92 years. It is an invaluable source of information for future generations.

Not bloody likely … not this cat.
I don't like the heavy handed tactics the CN gov uses in attemting to collect census info. Their threats make me want to dig in my heals.

As you wish. I suspect that the government couldn't care less whether you complete the census form or not. On the other hand, your grandchildren might care.

I trust that you don't file income tax, hold a job, drive a car or have provincial medical insurance, all of which feeds information into government databases.

wetboy100

well, i suspect youre wrong on some of these assumpitons. obviously, they do care if I fill out thier form, or they wouldnt send it out, and threaten people for not doing so.

tax=wrong, job=wrong, car=wrong, insurance=wrong
But those are sepeate issues.

I'd rather my grandchildren got the information passed to them from me in other ways than the government.

I do not trust them any more than I HAVE TO . (and thats the point I was trying to make)

I do not trust a gov that does not trust me.

ANARCHY!!!!!!!! :p

Chances are it was an overzealous "temporary" employee. Most of the census gatherers are not permanent employees of the "Canadian" government. For some the idea of the working for the "government" expands their head a little…..

Initially, I wondered why they need to do a census. I thought don't they find out the population by people filling out their income tax. This forum debate lead me to realize

  1. not all people fill out their income tax.
  2. some people to avoid paying income tax get jobs that pay cash. There are still a few out there.
  3. Income Tax doesn't find out children's numbers.( How many ETC.)
4.Those people that have cash jobs don't make enuff money to have cars.( or Drivers Licenses )
5.Provincal Medical files are personal, at which some people don't go to doctors for years. At one stretch it was 4 or 5 years for me.

Census is just an accurate count of people in each City,Province & the Country. But people avoid it like each & every other questionaire, So Cdn Government makes threats. Really it is all silly, but it is all just Stats.

Now I have a beef with what I had for # 1 above. I work for someone who never took enuff income tax off my check each money. He did so cause as Isaid in # 1 not everyone fills out their income tax. Actually, from what I know it was only me & 1 other out of 10 people. We both owe $1700+ to income tax, cause Our boss never took off the proper amount of income tax. He does this cause the other seedy employees who don't file income tax will leave to cash paying jobs if he does take off the proper amount.
now oweing $1300 cause I made RRSP contributions made me take actions to make sure I can pay it. I had to get a line of credit. Where if he took the extra $150 a month I wouldn't be behind like this. Cause each month you spend the money you have. Now I am going to be broke for MONTHS cause he is now taking off the proper amount.

So those of you who don't want to fill out the census.. Suck it up. It isn't a big deal b4 the guy knocked at my door I thought it was worse than it is from this forum.
As for it is a personal choice if you want to share your info in 92 years… When you are dead.. Who cares if you are dead???

DON'T spend the money you have. That's called living from paycheque to paycheque. Always pay yourself first. Put some away in a savings account every month, or to an RRSP. You should always have 1 month's worth of cash readily available for a 'rainy day'.

A friend of mine had been doing that since he was 18. Taking advantage of every tax benefit he could find, no impulse buying, (and staying single). He now goes to Las Vegas (to golf) 2 or 3 times a year.

He retires on June 2 at age 52.

redmax1

Where was that advice 25 years ago, "Staying single"? Ha!
2.5 kids, 1.6 cars, 1.7 pets, 45.3 hours at first job 27.6 hours at 2nd job and 10 hours at third job. Savings??? The only reason I save is because I have no time to spend.

Back to the census…. soooooo unless you live in a box, under a bridge and eat out a dumpster while wearing tinfoil, everything you do is tracked. Just walking into a mall sets a counter off. Now you use your bankcard, drive through an intersection with red light cameras (always on), have a phone, go to a doctor, own a home. It’s all tracked and if they really want to, the government, can get the info.

NOW the funny part……………………
Why are some people who don't like anybody tracking them or their movements or dealings, entering almost ALL their money on a money "Tracking" site over the internet?? ?? ?? If the gov. was really smart they would figure out how much you had entered at the start of the year and then do the math at the end of the year.

I thinks some of us would have so “splaning” to do.

Just my two cents,

Give Me Money

Put some away in a sasvings account every month, or to an RRSP. Pooga
I do put away in a savings and an RRSP each payday but now i have to find another means of saving it as at taxtime i recieved a frigin T5.
BTY try also depositing all means of Govt. money in that account too like Ralph bucks,GST,tax refund etc…

BANKCOLLECTOR

rrsp vs. property as an investment.
i buy property as my retirement fund as better value for your dollar and goes up in value more than rrsp. rental property is always nice… then someone else is helping you pay for your retirement.

BANKCOLLECTOR

redmax 1 … no problem it is called flipping your money and they would have to factor that in when doing the totals.
i get say 1000 dollars in 100's and enter them then i change them for fifties and enter them then twenties , tens and finally fives so for the total sum of $1000 dollars i have entered onto the site $5000 and i still have the $1000 which i can change for large bills again and start over. some of us play the game some of us just run what we get through our hands and spend. we who flip our money are just more addicted then the rest.

I love how Pooga always knows of a website with an opposing view of whatever the topic of the day is. Classic.

Hey, just call me a professional Devil's Advocate!

Getting different points of view is always a good thing, I think because one can never have too much information. Besides, there are always three sides to every story–yours, mine and the right one.
