So I have a question out there for Pooga, and this may be of interest to others. If I remember correctly, quite a ways back there was a discussion about skunky beer and beer bottles. Now I thought that Pooga recommended we buy domestic beer as they don't have the chemicals that clear import bottles have in them. However, drinking a Sleeman's Honey Brown a week or so ago, it was pointed out to me that they are clear bottles. So what is the story? Am I way off here? Thanks.
Clear import beer bottles, especially Mexican, contain UV inhibitors. Think of it as sunscreen in your beer. Sleeman's is in clear glass, but does not have these additives since they are banned in Canada.
So if you drink Sleeman's, be sure to get it fresh, and don't let it sit around too long. If you are outside drinking it, drink fast! :-)
Even in an amber bottle, the process you call 'skunky' (actually it is 'lightstruck') begins within 2 minutes in the sun. In clear glass (or plastic) it's about 30 seconds. Best bet? Cans!
