I see Idjit and MmmBeer have to update the collecting FAQ. It's not mentioned there.

Check out the Canadian Paper Money site. Should be an explanation there.

I have one 5, two 20, and one 50 dollar replacement note all from 1986. One from 1954 as well, just a 1 though. Hoping to get a couple of 1986 10's for Christmas.

Replacement notes are simply 'special notes' used to replace the regular ones that somehow got destroyed in the printing or cutting process. Being a printer for over 20 years, I know for a fact that there are so many things that can cause a sheet of banknotes to be pulled during the pressrun. And alot of these get through. Replacement notes are tough to find; all three-letter prefixes with the third letter being an 'X',two-letter prefixes have an asterick before the serial number. I have 2 20's, prefexies AIX and EIX. Any other prefixes out there?

I have all the bird series replacement notes. I'm working on the multicolored series. My most 'precious' replacement note is a 1954 Devil's Face $1, UNC. I am slowly building modified series replacement notes also.

in the earlier series there was an astrix () in front of the serial # to denote a replacement.

I have currently one $20 bill with an EIX for a prefix. I accidently sent one out that I put the URL on it. They both are not in the greatest shape. Still looking for $1's, $2's etc.
