Last night when I tred using some marked bills at Home Depots Self Serve Checkout the machine wouldn't accept 2 marked bills, 1 of pawnman's and 1 of trippy trip's, I didn't have any of my own to try but just wondering if anyone else has ever had this prob with machines that accept Bills.
Disclaimer: I apologize to all for shopping at a big box store run out of the USA but the local hardware store(Co-Op on Winnipeg&Ring Rd) doesn't have the flush set I needed for my toilet.
No need to apologise- you found out on your own why many consumers and most contractors shun Home Despot- I've left over 1000.00 worth of stuff on the counter on two occasions because of their gestapo attitude over credit cards. Funny, both times I've found better deals elsewhere. Did they refuse to accept the two bills? Was it a counterfeit checker?
their gestapo attitude over credit cards
Could you expand on that? I've never had any trouble.
That attitude sure happens at Mac's though. Went to pay for something with a credit card and they wanted to see my driver's license! Like you said, I left the articles on the counter, walked out and went across the street to 7-11. Never been back.
Rona is a Canadian based big box store. That has all the hardware that Home Depot has.
I never realized you can use cash at those automatic tellers.. I thought it was debit or credit only.
The only trouble I've ever had was service…on one occassion, I tried to flag down attendents on the floor, so that I could buy some wire from their bulk wire rack. After standing around for about ten minutes without any luck,I phoned the front desk using my cell phone, and asked them to page somebody.
On another occasion, when I was reshingling my roof, I purchased shingles on a Tuesday, and they assured me they would be delivered by 10 A.M. the next day. By 11:00, they still hadn't shown up, so I called the store. They said that the shingles had just been loaded on the delivery truck, and it had just driven off the property. At the worst of times, it would take about 15 minutes to drive from Home Depot to my house, 30 minutes to walk. The shingles didn't show up until after 1:00. My paid help had about three hours of downtime in which nothing could be done, as the old shingles were already off the roof. I wrote a letter of complaint to Home Depot, but had no response of any kind from them.
As a result, I'll only buy from HD if I can get something myself and don't require assistance. Anything else, I go to Co-op.
As for machines rejecting bills, I have experienced something simular and it could very well be the condition of the bill. Whatever the machine scans for could be too worn down to detect. As for the hardware store issue, I've never experienced a problem per say with Home Depot. I prefer McDiarmid Lumber myself. Smaller store, easy to find the staff, and pricing is inline with Home Depot. Don't have a Rona in my end of town. Maybe in a few years they'll build one.
Now.. a female input as to why the bills didnt work.
I have had to basically stop stamping bills, because many machines around here (a whopping 2) would reject them. Members bitched and complained.. So, I inquired, and the reason is, because the stamp is on one of the security features… So.. I have stamped maybe one or two per day :(… and the rest I cant.. just because of where I work.
Unless i guess a new stamp and have one straight line and smaller writing.
So continue shopping had Home Depot, and when you're done, you can come and do my house.
I just spent a bunch of marked bills at Rona with not a single proble plus I got airmiles to boot… but the only comment from the teller was her dog looked like the wolf on my shirt… lmao almost offered her my glasses
They didn't think my signature on the back was legible enough, and my picture was blurry- so they wanted ID. This after the transaction went through. I told them to take a flying leap and they had to return all the stuff. I'm used to good service, not the inquisition when I shop. If they treat me badly, I'll never be back- there's simply too many good stores to let one of them abuse you a second time. I feel the same way about stereo shops. (Ask me sometime about Crazy Kiley's).
j-lynn try a red ink stamp they seem to pass through the machines without detection.
krazy kiley's and i also could tell you many stories as i use to be in the same business.
KK…
Last year, with one of the Home Lotteries, my group won a 'ghetto blaster' type stereo, with AM/FM/CD, cassette and MP3 capability. With the letter that authorized pickup of the unit, there was a seperate letter stating that Krazy K would be substituting the designated model with a 'superior' model, due to shortages in the system. I picked it up, and before I opened the box, I noticed it said nothing about MP3 capability. I went to the Sony website, which showed that the recommended retail price of the initial model was about $189, the subsitute was $149.
I contacted the overseer of the lottery (Price Waterhouse?) and complained. Eventually a replacement was given in exchange that was MP3 capable.
This may sound like not much of a big deal but if you consider that perhaps 250 of these ghetto blasters were given away, if Kiley's made an extra $40 on each, that's an extra $5,000 they made.
I seemed like a fraud to me, but I didn't pursue it further.

Yikes…. That certainly sounds suspicious….
Here in Alberta it is becoming incresingly difficult for me to use my credit cards. Most places are starting to ask for driver's licences, and I don't drive. A picture ID around here costs about $75, or I could get a passport for about $100, so I feel what you're saying.
I think that you will find over the next while that more and more places (not just Home Depot) are going to start asking for ID when accepting credit cards. This is a practise that is in wide spread use in the United States. It is a means to combat credit card fraud.
The thing that needs to happen is for the credit card companies to implement a program where credit card holders can have their picture on the credit card, although I suppose that even this can be fraudulently done.
Credit card fraud is one of the biggest problems facing business today and one of the most expensive to combat. As a small business owner I think it is a small price to pay to be asked to show ID when making a credit card purchase. It helps the business owner and ultimately the consumer.
Credit Cards & Shell
We recieved an internal Shell memo last month about how soon Credit Cards will require a 4 digit pin just like a debit card starting in June of 2008 and we will recieve new POS equipment before then - hopefully this will be done on time, currently we only ask for photo ID when someone trys to buy more than 1 pack of cigs on a Credit Card.

This is probably a long overdue idea to help curb fraudulent credit card use…..
Yeah but Shell saying June 2008 usualy means add 17 months till it realy happens.

Well, I guess all of the issuing banks need to get on board with the idea as well, 17 or 18 months may not be enough… ;o)
I've not read a CC agreement in some time, however, has I last understood it, that if the signature matches the card then that is all that the biz can ask for. Youre making a deal with the CC company not the store, and the store has made an agreement with the CC company to accept the cards.
I know some companies were asking for phone #'s when I used my CC and told them its not required for me to give that under the cardholder agreement. They backed down and all went well.
At the store where I work, if the signature is gone on the back of the card I will ask for more ID. Once or twice I had customers leave their purchase because they only brought the CC with them. Kind of silly if they knew you could not read the sig. Ive also had several customers in recent weeks that have written on the sig. strip Ask for photo ID which is a really good idea. If someone steals your wallet (or purse) then the card is no good, except maybe on the net until its canceled.
Gouche sez: implement a program where credit card holders can have their picture on the credit card,
My CC had my picture on it, and a signature and HD still wanted ID. There's just too many places that have excellent service and competitive prices to allow a company to treat you like this- just gp elsewhere.
It sounds kinda weird Idjit… picture & signature on the credit card.. then still need a photo ID.
Unfortunately when a company puts in a policy to avoid credit card fraud, they may not realize some credit cards have pictures on them. So when the policy is enforced to full strength, ( as it usually does for a couple months after implementation ) the tellers still have to ask for photo ID even with a photo on the credit card.
Even I find this policy somewhat strange if the credit card has a photo on it, to make the teller ask for further photo ID, Unless they copy down your address to hopefully send bill collectors to your place.
Home Depot now has self serve tills. They don't ask for photo ID. But, I don't know how you would put the item in the bag, when you just purchased a BBQ.
Like I said, there's way too many good places with great service to have to put up with this crap. I never go there any more, and I will tell anyone who listens what crappy service I received there. I still tell my Krazy Kileys story and that happenned over 15 years ago. Retailers (and others) who screw around their customers are deluding themselves if they think this doesn't cost them something. This is why the thread on Rose's Marking Devices was so sad. Here was a great little company with a good product and freindly staff that had plenty of free word-of-mouth advertising from us, who piddled it all away because he came to work with an attitude one day. Whay a shame…
