Steak Pits used to be all the rage around here about 10-15 years ago. Went to them a few times.

I don't have a clue what a 'skeak' is though!

It's a small weasel-like animal- black with white stripes. People used to put them in a pit, like cock fighting or dog fighting. Problem was, when they fought, they often sprayed each other with a real smelly odour. After a while, people abandoned this activity, but the skeak pits remained. Eager to find a use for these pits and the buildings that housed them, restaurants adapted the pits to cooking steaks, but they could never shake the name 'skeak pit'. Common usage prevailed however, and they are still called 'skeak pits' even though no one remembers the lowly skeaks that once fought there.

My grand-daddy and his daddy afore him raised skeaks. Remains of the original skeak barn's foundation still remain on the back forty. I hear foxes use it as a den these days…

We've used skeaks for meals during survival training in the military. They are very versatile. You can bake 'em, you can boil 'em, you can fry 'em, it just doesn't matter, they're still darn SKEAK!

If anyone is interested, there is an obscure Science fiction short story by Eric Frank Russell called 'Allamagoosa', which tells of events which occur on board a starship, based on an origin similar to the 'skeak'.
