Mutilated

While cruising the Bank of Canada site, I found this description of what the BoC considers a mutilated note. And interestingly enough, nowhere on their entire site do they use the word "defaced"!

What is a mutilated bank note? A bank note is mutilated when its condition requires special examination to determine its value. The most common causes of mutilation are fire, floods, chemicals, and explosives, deterioration by burial, animal, insect or rodent damage.

So when bank tellers tell you that your 'defaced' note will be "sent for mutilation", are they in fact breaking the law themselves???
