Hi, I have a $5 bill that looks quite old, and says "Ottawa 1972" on it. I tried to enter it into the database, but the serial number is only 9 digits long. Is this a fake, or is it merely outdated?

It's too old for us. We can only enter bills with alpha-numeric serial numbers (AAANNNNNNN). If it's in good shape, it might be worth saving, though.
Your bill sounds like a 2 letter (CA1234567 for example)7 # Banknote. If the serial #'s are on the back then it's a 1979. Try entering it into the <a href="http://www.whereswilly.com/wrapper.php?page=series"target="_blank">Where's Willy</a> Database if it can't be entered here and either marking it as such or letting it go as a stealth bill. You didn't mention the condition and if it's nearly new, I wouldn't think of marking it since it would be worth quite a bit more than face value.
Good Luck!!
