Blizzard

Well folks, how do you like our first real blizzard in 20 years???

Some people are idiots! Left work early to come home. Try this:

2:15 - pulled out of parking lot onto 1st Ave behind brewery
2:20 - one block away, waiting to make a left turn onto 25th.
2:40 - after noticing that the lane had not moved, decided to take a chance and go south on 1st to the Buckwold Bridge
2:45 - on the freeway in no time at all. only doing 20-40 klicks, but no problem.
2:55 - get to left turn lane at Boychuk, about 5 vehicles ahead of me. Hard to tell in white out conditions
3:20 - nobody moving. get out of truck and walk ahead. so do others. find about 4 vehicles(sports types!) stuck in small drifts. 6-8 people out. we start pushing. everything looks good, back to vehicle.
3:30 - after moving up to one spot from turning, everything stops again. get out. push 2 more vehicles. finally find little sports car stuck in middle of highway, blocking the access to Boychuk. THE IDIOT HAD LOCKED HIS DOORS AND DISAPPEARED!!?!?!?!?$%#!!@.</b> 3:45 - convince everyone ahead of me to make u-turn and try going to Circle Drive and getting off at Taylor. I do the same. 3:50 - onto Taylor. slow going, but going. 3:55 - get stuck in my driveway! 2 minutes to shovel and into the garage. Home at last!

100 minutes, for drive that usually takes me 12! (and on nightshift, 9)

At least you made it home safely, Pooga. 3 people in the department I work in couldn't even leave our Saskatoon office today because of the big snowdrifts (apparently 5 ft. drifts).

Sarge

Three weeks ago, when booking shifts at the Liquor store, I decided I would take this Wednesday off, to go to Regina to discuss some things with my training sargeant. Nedless to say, I didn't even risk the trip, and only went out of the house once, to brush accumulated snow off the lens of my security camera.

some people were fools to even leave home to go to work … and what bonehead told everyone to use their hazzard lights. is the idiot stuck or broke down or think he is in a parade turn off the hazzard lights and use your regular lights. you were lucky and made it home i had lots of fun plowing around idiots who do not have the correct transportation or tires to be out in weather like we had today. unless your in a emergency services job look out your house window… call your boss and tell him snow day and stay home. leave us who work with the snow do our jobs so the summer drivers can use the road. there otta be a law about driving none winter equipment in snow like we had.

Pooga

I believe that I heard the Mayor make that request on the radio.

some people were fools to even leave home to go to work

Well, I leave for work before 6AM, and at that time it didn't look any worse than a regular Saskatchewan storm.

Yeah, snow removal people have a heck of job to do today. And the extreme cold isn't going to make it any easier for them or their machinery. Driving a little 2-seater on summer tires was not a smart idea yesterday. Even city buses were pulled off the road. I guess that we've been spoiled by the relatively mild' winters of the last few years!

some people cannot afford to stay home from work. others, like doctors and hospital staff or nursing homes etc, have others who need them to be at work. I do the 11 to 7 a.m.. shift and while it was slow going on the highway, visibility was almost nil at times, I made it, slow and careful is the way to go. blankets, candles, etc in car. water. can live off my fat for a year so no problem there. lol

unless you are in an emergency service hosp. fire, medical, caring for the ill or seniors, tow trucks, police, snow clearing … when a blizzard hits you sould stay off the roads and let us do our jobs. many had to risk their well being to save those who ventured out and got into trouble. money is fine but it is not worth your life. government workers in non emergency duties and laywers and schools and hundreds of other jobs could have stayed home and the world would not have fallen apart in a day (hey it is still around after a stat holiday). people went out for silly reasons and to jobs that could not be done due to the bad weather but they showed up so as to qualify for a days pay.
(next the unions and government will add bad weather days to the list of paid days off (just like family days).) i spent the day clearing snow from emergency entrances to hospital and senior homs (are they my customers no but i was there to help)(will i be paid for it no they probably don't even know who cleared the snow). i was out in an emergency capacity to help those who were foolish enough to venture out in vehicles not ment for such conditions. the postal truck i plowed a way for to clear confederation drive would have been better left in the 51st. street parking lot (i am sure the mail could have been picked up one day late). the point i wanted to make was simple a storm like this happens once every few years and people should learn to sit back and wait it out, all the extra vehicles on the road did not help those of us who work in situations like this. stay home let us clean up the mess that nature gave us and then you may venture out to a safe work place and carry on. i saw many school buses out in the blizzard that should have never taken the kids to school in the first place if ever there was a need for a snow day that was it.

Oh, if it were only that simple….. sometimes union agreements and government regulations make it imperative that workers show up for their jobs, however circumstances differ from workplace to workplace…..

Pooga

No kidding. Don't show up for work and and it goes on your record as 'poor attendance'. Or worse, in a non-union setting, it can be grounds for dismissal.

Actually, I was off to work very early in the morning, and it didn't seem too bad then.

BANKCOLLECTOR

well as an employer and given the shortage of workers in the market place i would think one day off due to very poor weather (blizzard) that poor attendance or dismissal would not be a factor. now if this was one of a long list of missed days or you very an employee on the verge of being fired (straw that broke the camels back so to speak) then sure you might lose your job. as for rules in government and unions to miss a day for personal safety issue unless it is the military or emergency services i am sure that would not be a big violation. maybe i am just a real understanding employer. it all okay now blizzard is over and roads are being cleaned and i am back to my paying cistomers not clearing emergency paths. you must have been off to work early pooga as at 5.30 am west side was bad.

Pooga

maybe i am just a real understanding employer

From what I have heard, I know that you are.

you must have been off to work early pooga as at 5.30 am west side was bad.

6:00AM on the east side was like a regular winter storm. Not much snow, and visibility was decent. Nothing out of the ordinary. Didn't notice downtown getting socked in until about 9:00AM.

Obviously this is a little late, but I found getting home quite easy actually. Left work across the street from Pooga's place at 2 after we heard some intersections were being shut down. Took 1st ave across the Buckwold bridge after avoiding all the morons trying to turn onto 25th St (traffic was backed up for blocks in both directions on 1st and 2nd ave). 8th st was relatively dead. Turned into my parking spot at home and took Thurs and Fri off (well…Friday wasn't intentional..the old truck wouldn't start..LOL). The trip took me about 20 min. Called work back and told everyone there the quickest way home.
