Here is an offical reply I got from The Bank of Canada on a question I asked them about the legality of stamping bills:
The Bank of Canada is aware that certain groups stamp Canadian bank notes in order to track their journey throughout Canada.
While neither the Bank Act nor the Criminal Code deal with the mutilation or defacement of bank notes, the Bank of Canada strongly objects to any mutilation or defacement of bank notes including simple markings similar to your example. All writing on notes limits their life. Such instances of mutilation and defacement carry a cost associated with them due to accelerated requirements for note replacement. Further, the mutilation and defacement of notes is not condoned as Canadian currency is a symbol and source of national pride.
Having said this, the bank note you possess remains legal tender and can be used in commercial transactions.
I hope this information will be helpful and thank you for your interest in Canadian currency.

Another version I see. It sounds like different people at the BoC have different standards. While this responder "strongly objects", we had one (a guy) a few months ago simply say that the BoC "frowns upon" the marking of bills.
And this looks like a different group as well. This is the "Bank Note Communication and Compliance Team", the guy was from the "Currency Education Team". I wonder if that makes a difference.
But we've had so many people questioning the BoC about marking, maybe they're getting a bit frustrated! I say leave them alone, and they'll leave us alone!!!!
I think the CMT team should get 5 million bucks from the government to prove one way or the other that stamping bills reduces the life of the bill. I personally believe it EXTENDS the life of a bill, and for 5 million bucks, I'll prove it…
"I personally believe it EXTENDS the life of a bill, and for 5 million bucks, I'll prove it…"
I'll Help !!!!
get 5 million bucks. I personally believe it EXTENDS the life of a bill,
I'll assist.
But you may not be that far wrong. Look at the 500 and 600 day hits we're getting from 5's! And their life expectancy is supposed to be a year. Someone should point that out to 'Sylvie'!
Plus when we get a bill to mark, we lovingly smooth out the folded corners, and repair the worst rips with tape that we purchase, thereby extending the life of the bill, as well as furthering the economy!
I think we should apply for a grant of some kind. God knows the government will spend money on stupider things.
At the next meeting we should write up a proposal and send it in. Since Jean is on his way out I think he'll approve just about anything.
I think fifty thousand would be right. It would keep the economy moving and provide about 10 of us with enough operating capital to continue to live while we did the study.
Oh, and buy tape, ink, ect
Then I could get a stamp without paying for it.
I agree we should apply for a grant, but $50,000 isn't near enough. And if you can get 5 mill Idjit, count me in for the marking entering and spending…
True enough, however my request was made on June 24th, and they just got back to me.. :)
We might be working the folks in Ottawa too hard :)

maybe the government, instead of giving us money, should make it unlawful to not enter bill on cdn-money and stamp them. Therefore everyone in the country is doing it and giving hits all around. Maybe a bit extreme, lol.
Good idea, redmax, now if we can somehow tie Quebec's interests into it maybe we can pull this off.
I mean really now, Quebec seems to get everything it asks for, why not this site? I'm willing to bet that if a site like this originated in Quebec the whole country would follow and say, "those quebecers sure are smart!" How many Quebecers did you see at the last Olympics and even so how many stood for/sung the national anthem? Why weren't there more athletes from other provinces. I don't mean to rant, but if you were to see how many in Parliament have french names you have got to wonder. Appeal to their best interests and you'll get your money.
Notice the Bank of Canada's head happened to be French? If I were to change my name to a french name and ask her, maybe I'd get a more favorable response. Don't you get it, all the french can say to the rest of Canada is an assured, NO!
Get out of Quebec before you go completely insane…
I agree with Pooga, we at CMT take care of our bills to get the most hits possible. I didn't realize that paper money had such a short life span. Oh yeah, Idjit, I'll help too!
True Quebec does get much of waht they ask for, are you saying however that we here @ the cdn-money site threaten to form our own courty if the goverment does not give us what we want…
No better yet we could just hold a vote to seperate, and then the goverment could award millions in bogus advertising contracts to people here @ the site, and we would of course vote 50.1% no, so we could do it all again when the money runs out.. :)

Too late, bannman, besides I may have to change my name 'cause I'll no longer be a frog. I'll leave, sometiime when I'm good and ready.
Yes, we should declare Canada a new country without Quebec and have them deported to ?France!!!!……….HA HA HA HA on a more serious note (ha ha again) the site should be given a grant on the terms that it IS a currency tracking study. If all else fails, just say that it promotes unity and communication among all Canadians. Would be kind of neat if the bill comments went along the lines of "how was your day". I dunno, just some ideas!
What we really need to do is get the government on side with us and have them print the URL on every bill for us at the printers… that way every bill every produced will have the potential to be tracked. :)
-dr
Sure- and who's gonna get these hits? HMMMMMM?
"who's gonna get these hits?"
I guess they would go to who ever entered them first!!
I think dr would have to expand the site and the Government would have to pay him for administrative duties. It would be a full time job with the amount of new users. (Government wages, medical plan, pension, all for doing something he likes to do! GO dr!)
Sorry my sever is messing around!

What every bill needs is a barcode so entering bills is easier.

crap! how can we prevent double postings?
Don't post twice? I don't really know, actually.
And Dr, I've thought of saying that forever. That would be the best way to go. Of course, one of us would have to be Governor of the BoC to order that to happen.
