Actually, in this case Skype is a service of sorts that you can use to communicate for free or relatively cheap. I'll add a Skype field to the next version (if I remember).

should know better than to put advert. links in the forums. this is not right

It's not an advert. This is a legitmate Internet service.

Similar, if not superior to AOL's AIM or Yahoo! Voice. Although dr prefers Jabber, it's only for IMing and doesn't do voice or video.

still a service for sale. there are many legit internet services out there does that mean we are going to start flogging them here?

i went to the site via your link and what i saw was someone wanting to sell me another service.

now dr has mentioned he may add that service to the site could you please expain to me how this service would be used in relation to the site. i must be missing something here?

It is a communication service that allows users can chat online. It is a much better product than the Chat service offered on this site. I use it regularly to chat with my brother in Toronto.

okay now would that be a feature to replace the seldom used chat area of the site. We would all have to pay for this sevice? I am just curious about it as if it is a cheaper service then regular phone company then may be worth a look. I get unlimited talking anytime anywhere fright now from Sask Tel and not limited to only one number. Looks like time for a coffee meeting to talk about this and other items.

It is not meant for everyone to run out and acquire this service. It is meant for those that wish to use or already use the service. Simply put, it is a competitor of sorts for Yahoo Chat, MSN, ICQ, Jabber and other IM type software currently available. If you look under your profile you will see that you can make an entry for these types of programs in your profile. Pooga is suggesting that a similar entry be made availabe for those that use Skype…..

and what of gmail chat??? it's pretty elegant in itself and much less intrusive than a lot of them. and since we alREADY have ads from google, maybe this should be the one of choice! (tongue in cheek, of course!) i can see this getting out of hand quite quickly! :)

putting all manner of IM choices could become unwieldly. maybe just an entry for IM and let people put their one(s) of choice. but whatever makes sense -- people's personal choices are inexplicable. want evidence?... let's open the Mac/MS/linux debate.... :)

gouche 92 for us computer challenged people i never knew what all those items were for … when i looked at your profile it just said under jabber …ya but she don't like it.

Skype is a free service to a point, like the others that gouche mentioned. You can also 'upgrade' and pay for it allowing you to call any landline direct from your computer.

But the free part is pretty good. I use it to talk to my little brother in Vanuatu.
