If youre lucky enough to have good vision, you probably have not ever thought about how difficult it is to distinguish between different bills, but if you were visually impaired or blind it is a pretty big problem for those folks, and a surprisingly easy problem to fix. Of 180 countries in the world that have paper currency, the US is the only one that prints all of its bills the same size and color regardless of denomination. IN November of 2006, a judge ordered the US Treasury to make paper money accessible to the blind, citing the governments violation of Section 504 of the rehabilitation act that guarantees equal access in government programs. Sounds good so far, but the Treasury Secretary has filed an appeal saying that its too expensive, and it would be an undue hardship on the vending machine industry. Isn't that a kicker!!!!
This has always been my biggest complaint with dealing with US currency, It forces you to look at every bill very carefully when making a transaction or excepting change. Couldn't the US take a lesson from we Canadians and at the least color code there currency??
It will be very interesting to see how this develops in the future, but I'am sure not going to be holding my breath.
