hi forum, the bills i am wondering about are:
1937 Gordon/Towers $100 very good condition
1986 $5 bills - 16 consecutive serial numbers UNC
1937 Elesyne/Towers $1 UNC
1954 Beattie/Elesyne $50 very good condition
those are the ones that we are most interested in knowing.
any info on these would be appreciated
thanks
Hi Derek,
I looked up your bills for you and this is the information I found:
1937 $100 is valued at $125-150 in very good condition
1937 $1.00 there was no signature "Elesyne/Towers". The three signatures on the left side are Osborne, Gordon & Coyne.
1954 $50.00 again no Elesyne. The three signatures on the right side are Coyne, Raminsky (both typed) Rasminsky, Bouey (both lithographed). It would also depend if the $50.00 note is a "Devil's Face" potrait or a Modified potrait.
1986 $5.00 bills would depend on the signature and the prefix (first three letters). Being in consecutive order would probably make them more collectable to some collectors.
I'm sorry I couldn't help out more. Maybe rudyk will have some more to offer.
hey canucksfan…thanks for the info though. much appreciated. and i'll check the signatures again but i'm pretty sure they said elesyne….weird. btw…love the name. i live in calgary….moved here about 15months ago from bc and am still (and will always be) a canucks fan…even though my uncle and my girlfriend are both flames fans and try hard to convert me…no go!
thanks again.
edit
my uncle brought out the bills again and we figured out that the signatures are Coyne/towers. guess it was just hard to read.
thanks again.
Your 1937 $1.00 UNC is valued at $70.00, if the prefix is O/M $85.00 and if the prefix is W/N $110.00
The 1954 $50.00 in Very Good is $80.00 - $100.00 Devil Face
and pretty much face value if Modified Face.
Nice to see a Canucks fan in Calgary. Maybe it's time to try and convert them. Welcome to CMT. Have fun money tracking!
where did you find this info…..please share!
I do have a stack of older cash as well.
items like this ask rudyk as he is the field expert here.
the definitive word on a banknote's value is, of course, the market. doesn't matter what anyone tells you, the note is worth what someone will pay you for it – and that is REALLY good to remember (too many people get upset when they can't get "what the book said!" for their money).
the general guide to what things are worth (and mighty fine reading for money nerds like me!) is the publication Canadian Government Paper Money: A Charlton Standard Catalogue . it is published annually and mine is out of date (18th Edition 2006, R. J. Graham, Editor). it is available from Coin and Collectable dealers for about $15 (at least my checking reveals the 19th edition is…). the 20th edition is out around july.
another way of finding general prices is to see how much people are soaking others for banknotes on ebay. a lot of listings are there and a search of past auctions will often reveal what ludicrous amounts some people are willing to pay. :)
or you can ask here!… i can give you a ballpark figure that is a couple years out of date and at least one other reader of this forum (canucksfan, i believe) has the more recent edition and is pretty forthcoming with value lookups (despite his questionable taste in hockey allegiance :) ).
pookiekins - I have been a collector of paper money and coins for 15 years and as rudyk mentioned I also use the Charlton Standard Catalogue. I have the 19th edition (most recent). So when I try and help out a fellow collector with information I am giving them the book value. A note or coin no matter what the value is only worth what a collector is willing to pay. I have seen notes sell for 3-4 times book value and I have seen notes sell half of book value.
rudyk - Questionable taste in hockey allegiance? Are you telling me there is a better team? (Please don't say the Leafs…LOL)
The Leafs is a laugh..
The Oilers are definately better. They are just going though tough times this year.
Last Year was a close call!!
The Oilers are definately better
Definitely.
They are just going though tough times this year.
Actually, the last forty have been tough.

Forty?? Hmm the 80's definately not FORTY years ago
Since The Montreal Canadian's lost the exclusive rights to take players from the OHL. The Oilers are the only team to win 5 Cups in a Decade.
Another! Hmmm! The Oilers weren't even in the NHL 40 years ago.
And a side note. They lost the greatest player to play the game. Wayne Gretszky in 87. They still won it the Next Year 88.
Then won it again in 90.

Sorry for the confusion. I thought that you were talking about the Leafs.
I think it's time we take this discussion over to the "Off Topic" forum. Telling you how great the canucks are has nothing to do with issues regarding money…so let's continue this debate over there…..

Actually, Gretzky was with them when they won in 1988. He was traded to L.A. on August 9th of that year.
