I am looking at getting a new computer. nothing wrong with my old one, I just want a new one. I give up on sasktel getting high speed so instead of just getting a new part to use satellite which is finally here (yay!!) I am looking at a new one. Since I know little to nothing can anyone offer help? I know I need lots of memory because of pictures. I had my old one added to. I have a chance to get any kind I want for a decent amount a month and NO INTEREST! Are laptops any good? help?

I just got a new Gateway laptop for Christmas and I love it. It has an 80gig harddrive which is great for storing all my pics.It has 1gig of RAM so it works very fast, and the best is that it has an AMD processor and not a useless pentium which have a habit of freezing. I love my laptop and with a built in wireless network card I can get on the internet just about anywhere without having to subscribe to a network company. buying a laptop thats right for you is a great investment.

Pooga , you got to be carefull now you may be brought up on charges of trying to influence our members by directing them to a web page considered to be a advert to promote a product or service. ~grin

Besides how many bioinformaticians like your self do you think are in the World that would need such a computer do these simple tasks with out having to read a manual for "dummies" to figure out there system first. ~lol

Maybe for unsolicited links. However, antics DID ask for help first. When it comes to photo management and correction, I wouldn't want her to make a big mistake. :-)

If you are doing pictures & that is you primary concern,
I have to agre with Pooga, even though I am a PC preson.

However, the problem with Mac, Once you get away from multimedia, pictures & movies, You are limited cause to get software for Mac is more difficult.

The nice thing about PC's is you have software for everything. Photoshop software isn't supposed to be as good, but everything else is much more available for a PC.

Lord_Comedy and Pooga are both right about the photo work and Macs. As macs are the system best designed for photo and video work. They have the best in high end video and very fast graphics. All the videographers swear by them.
But… as Lord_Comedy says, you can get a lot more options and upgrades for PC's and at much better prices.
You really need to decide exactly what you mostly want to do with it and choose something for you personally. Your system is personal to you and in the end you want something you are going to be happy with.

Couldn't agree more. System pros and cons aside, it's really about what YOU need to do with it.

factored in to this and AGAIN, system preference not considered, is the learning curve associated with changing systems. if you've been with mac forever… stay with it. if all you have ever used is PC, then go with that. be honest with yourself and your needs. for most of us… usually just another storage device, an newer video card or a new monitor would be enough. :)

I agree that you should stick with what you know. Unless you are manipulating pictures professionally, there is nothing you can't do with a Mac that you can't do on a PC. I use Linux rather than Windows and can do pretty much anything you can do on a Mac or a Windows PC (GIMP is a brilliant alternative to Photoshop and works on Linux, Windows or Mac). If you decide on the PC route, I recommend Dell. I've owned Dell desktops and laptops and would never shop anywhere else. That said, if you ask ten people you'll get ten different recommendations.

finally our leader speaks on the topic on which he has vast knowledge … as he has said ten people ten answers and in the end you should go with the system you know. dell seems to be making great headway in the lap top market and desk top also …i wonder how much of dell bill gates owns?

antics

wow! a whole lot of ideas. ok lets say I go with Dell, there are many price ranges etc. I am leaning more towards a laptop. do they come with the part required for using satelite? What I need is a list of what I need, including programs for bookwork etc. I am using lotus now but should have no problem switching to another. I need top ut it on paper and hand it in so that they can put it all together for me. I have no idea what I need. other than room for photos (editing included), bookwork etc. I am lost in that department. anyhow gotta enter a few bills before dealing with dogs etc. I am so far behind on that that I have pages written down. told hubby he sells too much.

Pooga

Quickbooks is a good acounting solution for small business.

(But of course you can't beat iPhoto for combined photo management/editing/utilities. And the price is right. Free with the OS!)

antics

I have iphoto and yes I love that one. I need to know how much memory to ask for as in size? what is the most common accounting program? is that quickbooks? does it do spreadsheets as well? what I need are the sizes or numerical values or whatever it is called. I know how to use a computer but know little to nothing about how they are made. kink of like my car. I can drive it, but get someone else to repair it etc. I used to change oil but easier to let someone else. what size ram?? is it still called that? do I need to ask for. they will put together whatever I need and give me the programs. how much memory or whatever. are hard drives different sizes?? what do I ask for? I looked at some flyers but I still dont have a clue as to what 850 mh somethings are etc. I know I am not making sense. it looks like gibberish to me.
