geocache?

So, this site is supposed to be about tracking the regular/normal flow of money, right? With that in mind, is a bill being tracked in a geocache really going with the normal flow? It does not seem like it to me. I suppose it is interesting that the bill will travel so much, but it almost kinda seems like some sort of cheating maybe. Any opinions anyone?

Could use more details on this particular bill, but it's kind of hard to decide what is normal and what isn't. After reviewing some of the comments from hits that I have received over the years, I have to say that my concept of 'natural' has become distorted. The fact that I track bills is a perfect example of an unatural act- money was never intended for this purpose, yet here I am…

OK-I will be the first to ask. What is a geocache??

Geocaching is an outdoor treasure-hunting game in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers (called "geocaches" or "caches") anywhere in the world.

The bill that got me thinking about it was this one. It's first on the list of bills with the most hits. One of Sweetie's bills got bumped down to second place because of it.
I've wanted to get a bill on the top hits list since I started using this site, and it seems to me like putting a bill into a geocache would give you an unfair advantage. (AGENT66's bill was put in the geocache by an anonymous user, but I have seen bills put into them by registered users in the past). Honestly, I was really just wondering what others thought about the subject.

is the bill just part of the stash or must the player enter the bill to complete the geocache play. if they must enter the bill as part of the geocache play then yes i would think it is not getting fair hits but if the bill is just part of the stash and the geocache players are entering it out of being curious well then it becomes another shade of gray. would have to look at the stash and the instructions to know where this bill in question falls.

Not to mention that the person who originally put the note into the cache entered the note anonymously, so they don't even know about all the subsequent hits.

I hadn't noticed the user named "geocaching". I suppose that if a bill in a geocache encourages new users to sign up maybe it isn't all that bad.

trippy_trip

I don't know if you have to enter the bill when you find the geocache, or if it is optional. I hope it was just put in there with no instructions, that way it is still up to the person that found it to decide. Either way I think you're right, it is a gray area.

The interesting point is that the bill should have one less HIT. geocaching states in their comment that they commented on the bill earlier and then decided to sign up and enter it again……

What happens with geocaches is one person hides a box/container of items somewhere in the midddle of nowhere (hiking trail in the mountains, lake somewhere nice, whatever). The container is filled with assorted "Treasures". The coordinates are posted up on the geocaching site for people to go out and find (you get points or something for finding caches.) You take some piece of junk with you (to the geocache) so when you find the container you can exchange your item for one in the box.

its really quite silly, but makes for a good game for nature buffs I guess.

it seems like this bill is going from cache to cache. People are probably exchanging their item with the stamped money because it looks interesting, then they enter it, and throw it into the next container the seek out.

Its far from ordinary bill circulation me thinks.

"its really quite silly,"
…yeah, I'm pretty sure all those geocachers are saying the same thing about this site.
Ordinary bill circulation? There ain't no such thing. Any attempt to define 'normal' in a monetary system as complex as this defies definition. In fact, as soon as we enter a bill and mark it, we've defied the gods of 'normality' and any attempt after that to define 'normal' is, well, a little hypocritical.
There, now let the forums fly!

Geocaching silly??? No, no, no. It's a lot of fun and very good exercise, not to mention all the cool places that one would never see or go near unless someone had put a cache in place.

It's funny when talking to people about either this site or geocaching, I get stranger looks about this one.

You should sign up at geocaching.com and read some of the stories about finding cache's, some are really funny. I have just over a 100 finds and have been to parts of Saskatchewan that I would never have gone to otherwise.

Adults love it because, even though you have the coordinates, (depending on the gps unit and satellite's could be up to 10 meters out) there are some very ingenuous ways to hide an item. If you ever walk along the river bank, you will pass about 5 or 6 cache's, or go to Shoppers in Grosvenor Park you'll pass one of the hardest to find cache's, took me about 6 tries before I found it.

The kids love it because its a treasure hunt. I taken the entire family and some friends out on different occasions and all have enjoyed it.

There all sizes and kinds, from nano's ( the size of a fingernail) to 10L containers. There are one stop cache's and multi stop cache's (downtown Saskatoon has a ten step cache), Blackstrap lake has one you have to swim to (tough to get to in the winter lol)

Back to the bill in a cache, I don't think it's an issue at all. Even if you have to log the bill in , it won't be long until someone just keeps it and does not return it to a cache. Like any self regulating game, not all the people play by the rules.
