I have seen a message in the site from someone from the Government saying that it was not ilegal to write on the notes. Where is this message - I cannot find it and I would like to read it again.
Thank you

Thank you MmmBeer.
I have to confess that I do not like the answer. I thought it was ok to write on the note. Makes me think now if I should be doing this.
While disliked by some, and frowned upon by others, it is not illegal to write on a banknote. Think of all the banktellers who would be in trouble when they write the number of notes in a stack on the top note, or accidentally stamp a note while wielding their equipment!
Speaking of stamps, most of the addicted trackers do end up investing in a stamp. Saves time and pain (from carpal tunnel syndrome!).
I understand what you mean. If I understand correctly, the Bank of Canada will take them out of circulation if they find them. That is too bad.

No they won't. In fact, if banks send in marked notes to the BofC that are in otherwise good condition, the banks are charged by the BofC to put it back into circulation. Only if the note meets BofC standard removal criteria is the note destroyed.
That being said, I have been told by some tellers that their branch will purposely mutilate a marked note (a Federal crime!) to get it out of circulation.
Oh I see. That is interesting and thank you for letting me know. I feel better marking these bills then. I have to confess that I have just started but I felt a bit guilty about doing it.
I have had occasion to deposit banknotes with a (human) teller. When they look curiously at my handwriting on the notes, I explain that it's an interesting site and that a bank manager turned me on to it. Sometimes they ask further questions, but I receive no admonishments. I found that when I said nothing is when I received flak about it.
