Server turbulence

Okay, okay. I know I promised this would never happen again, but I'm moving the server (again). However, I'm moving the server machine to a co-locate with Nucleus, a local ISP which has a bank vault which houses the servers. Yay for security. :) Anyway, I have another server there already and this machine that CMT is running on will replace that other machine as it's getting somewhat old.

So, I'm giving you all this information so that you don't get upset if there are some hiccups over the next week. Some things that may or may not happen are: down times, CMT scores not being updated, levels not being updated, etc. I'm not saying things won't work, just that there are going to be a few bumps over the next week or so. Since we've now moved the server three times, I think this fourth (and hopefully last) move will go smoothly.

What will this mean for you when it's done? Well, it's a better connection (with respect to both speed and uptime) and will give me more flexibility in the future. It also means that if the company I work for moves offices again and again and again, there are no hassles. I also means that CMT should always be located on a fast machine as there are other apps sharing the server so I will always be keeping it up to date (in terms of both hardware and software)

Thanks for the fore-warning on the move.

I know CMT takes up a lot of your time, but what I wonder is how hard does it hit your wallet? I can't imagine you ever refusing donations, but how much has this little 'adventure' set you back?

dr

I actually have never really thought about it. In terms of actual hard costs, I think the postal codes cost me $100 (since I received $200 in donations) and the current server cost about $1500. If you factor in the time spent coding, testing, answering email and fixing "joke" entries and such at say a cheap rate of $50/hr… well I'm sure I've spent at least several thousand hours. But it keeps me happy so it's all good.

So until Princess keeps you happier than we do, the site is in safe hands.

dr

Heh, no I am dedicated to this site for as long as I can afford to maintain it and keep it updated.

as long as I can afford to maintain it and keep it updated

That's sort of worries me. As of July 1, the site will be 4 years old. Obviously, the first 2 years were a bit slow. But did you ever anticipate the kind of use we have now? And who can guess where it will end up?

How long can we reasonably expect this site to continue?

Well, if it ever gets to the point that Dr can't afford financially to keep the site up, I know that a few, if not plenty of users would insure that it would.

dr

Well if I wasn't updating the server hardware and site code I would say that it would have a short lifespan. However, given that Java isn't going anywhere anytime soon, I think the site is safe for now. When the next "big thing" comes along, I'll probably just use this site as an excuse to get into whatever that next great thing is. :)

As for for my expectations, well I am constantly surprised by this and that. For example, it still blows my mind that people would seek out expoits and then exploit them. A lot of my time is spent patching server "holes" and fixing bugs in the site that could be exploited. It's too bad really that some people are like that.

I come from the old days of the Internet (pre-WWW, ie. 1991) I am a firm believer in openness and sharing of everything. It's that philosophy that keeps this site running really. I make no money from this and in fact it costs me money and time. But I started something and am prepared to maintain it's upkeep. Perhaps its sounds Zen-like or crusader-like or something, but anyway I digress.

"peering into the crystal ball….cutting edge communication"
I come in contact with several people a day who have the ability to read other people's minds as well as transmitting their thoughts.
