And, further more, it started as an ophan.
And, further more, it started as an ophan.
I can't STAND it anymore…!
Yes, Pooga, I have READ the faq's….
But I still don't get what an ORPHAN is!!!
Please to explain this?
Nice and gently for 21's feelings?
TY
OK, OK, ids like dis.. When youse gets a bill, an' youse stamps it and den forgets 2 ender it in da dadabase, or maybe youse gets da nummmer rong, den da firs' poor sap who enders da bill, well, it loogs like he's da firs wun who did it, not you. Den he's tikked off 'cause he didn't see whare a came from- der's no wun beforr him… see?
LOL
great explanation but how can you tell it is an orphan? I understand what they are and why but how can you tell. How do you know someone just did not enter the bill?
You don't. A bill can be orphaned by forgetting to enter it or entering it wrong. In both cases, when the next person enters the bill, it looks as though they are the first one- there's no previous history.
hmmm so if somebody marks but forgets to enters … good thing i enter every bill that goes through my hand! but its soooo hard when you use a credit card half the time … or a bank machine … from now on im going to be taking out cash! lol
We know it's an orphan because…
when you look at the hit info there's blanks on it?
or the first person is Ann Ominous?
Or WHAT?????
And anyways…how do you know the bill even HAD a stamp on it to begin with.
Wouldn't the same thing happen if someone just entered any old money in the HIT BOX?
If a bill has the first enterer as anonymous we know for sure it's an orphan. The only other way we know it's an orphan is when a user enters it and says something about the stamp on it and if after he has entered it he goes to the forum and mentions the fact he didn't give anyone a hit on that bill…
Usually when they only enter one bill, they are a new user (or one we never heard of) enter a comment like From Store, it would have been marked earlier. Why would they find this site, and only enter a single bill?
Once again Idjit please, this time put your teeth in.
The only way you can really tell if a bill's an orphan is when YOU enter a stamped bill you found and see that it does not generate a hit. A bill entered anonymously is not an orphan, it has been entered before- anonymously. An orphan bill is one that is stamped, but not in the database until you enter it. As the FAQ says:
"When you enter a bill with the website stamped or written on it, and it's not in the database, this is an orphan."
"…how do you know the bill even HAD a stamp on it to begin with."
You know because it's in your hands when you enter it, you would know if it has a stamp. Then, you say "Dag nabbit! an orphan!" Then you get on the forums and tell us all about it.
very well put Idjit but I have to tell you I enjoyed the earlier more colorful version much better. lol
For example:
<a href=http://www.cdn-money.com/cdnmoney/servlet/cmtViewBill?ID=196645 target=_new>This is an orphan!</a>
And theres the bill that started this.
I have seen links to so called orphans and I CAN"T SEE THE DIFFERENCE!!!!!
So, because of this thread I think that the FAQ needs to be changed.
Or else we need a separate "FAQ FOR DUMMIES" section. lol!
And thank you idjit for that last example but it was an obvious one.
Find another that is NOT so obvious and have me pick out the clue, k?
What do you call this?
I entered one and forgot to STAMP it…
What happens when one day someone is entering it as THEIR bill and I get a hit!
lol I'd love to see their face!
A ghost hit…I love it!
I emailed dr to remove it but I don't know if he did and I can't remember the serial anymore…
A ghost hit…I love it!
We have had a few of those.
Mostly Master's bills from his non-stamping days. I hit one and I think CJ hit 2 or 3.
21 Ahit from a stealth or phantom bill, (one you did not mark) is not an orphan because it gave you a hit. An orphan happens only when a bill that is marked fails to give anyone a hit. In Poogas example the first anonymous entry may be an orphan but we don't know for sure until the anonymous user gets on the forum and asks why when they entersd a marked bill no one got a hit ..
…a screw-up! Don't do this! Wrong! Bad dog! For Shame! Rats! Git Off My Land! Do Not Enter, Wrong Way! Sneaky! Dirty Rotten! You'll be Sorry! GRRRRR! ARHHHHH! #@!^%$#@!!
Not sure why you can't see the difference?
O.K., picture this:
You are sitting in front of your computer, trembling with anticipation. Why? Because you were out shopping, and you got a crispy new five, but better still, IT HAS A STAMP ON IT! Whahoo! Who could it be? You are driving home, almost breaking the speed limit, trying to get to your computer so you can find out who's stamp this is. All the way you are thinking up cute comments to put in the 'comments' field. You are cursing every red light. The idiot drivers around you seem to be going 10 kph, all of them bent on slowing your progress to your keyboard. Finally, your house is in sight. You screech into your driveway (assuming you have a driveway you can screech into), you forget your groceries in the car, fumble with the keys trying to open the door, cursing your clumsy fingers. Finally the door opens. You make muddy tracks from the door to your computer room, not wanting to waste time removing your boots. Seated in front of your keyboard now, you log on "Curses! Why is this taking so long! Darned DR! why can't you…" the bill entry screen appears, cutting off your rant. Your fingers are trembling as you enter the series, denomination and then the serial number. You've forgotten what you want to say in 'comments'. You write something, anything and then- your trembling index finger poised over the 'enter' key. This is too delicious, the emotion is almost overwelming, you are about to connect with a fellow CMTer in the most intimate way, and then- NOTHING! The silly jerk got the serial number wrong, or missed it in the pile of bills he was entering, or when he went to the phone. The long and short of it is- you were cheated! Now you hear a primal scream in the room, and you realize it is you! Robbed of that ultimate release, you collapse into a pile of bubbering despair. Your feelings of being robbed, violated, the disgust you feel for the person who created this tragedy all combine to make you feel the lowest you've felt in you entire life. Angrily, you log onto the 'forums' section and you write, as politely as possible so as not to alert the others there of your complete, hopeless addiction to this pastime; "I think I got an orphan today." You take another deep breath. "I got it at the grocery store" you type, tears streaming down your face now. You recount all the details of this tragic event. Then, a few sympathetic CMTers log on and share your grief. "There, there, 21" they'll say. "It's happened to me too." one will say. "Yes, those guys are all jerks", another will say. A timid third will offer: "What did the stamp look like? Was it red?" You know tracking down the owner of this bill is hopeless- the mystery will remain unsolved forever. You slowly turn away from the keyboard. You stamps offer no comfort now, you just turn out the light and leave the room.
This is what an orphan is. Any more questions?

I think Idjit has summed it up quite eloquently-the feelings we have all had at one time or another.
Well said Idjit
