Not that I condone or support ignorance. I do have some of my own.
No I didn't have problems finding how you track money or ( ADD NOTES) However.. Forums.. is constant on many web sites.. so it is easier for some internet people to find a FORUM.. then to Track money when it is hidden under ADD NOTE. esp when some people consider NOTES to be BILLS
I think when i started it was ADD BILL.. either way pretty obvious to people of some inteligence… As i said i have some of my own ignorance.. so i may have spelling mistakes or typeos.. & many I's not capitalized. If you look at how many people have joined to never enter any notes.. you will see that a great many people never made it around to finding where to TRACK MONEY.. Maybe TRACK MONEY could be in brackets for those people.. & future new people with the same problem. Some people don't care about how many links there are.. or care to search them out.
pooga, gouche92, rudy? I challenge those helpers & even DR to find out how many people have joined.. but never tracked a single bill.
Idjit.. if anyone answers my challenge.. that may arise some thought into how many more users .. or atleast hits could have been entered into the sysytem.
while your perspective is certainly valid and welcome, you have to acknowledge the biases inherent in the premise. you cannot expect all or even a significant percentage of people who join will ever want to seriously track banknotes. the exercise that you propose will not reveal anything about that which makes people not return any more than it will explain how many of us have chosen to stay. either you are interested in tracking money or you are not. and even THAT is not a constant for i can think of instances where people excited about money-tracking have essentially left the site – not because of any perceived shortcomings here, but simply because you cannot reasonably assume that interest or motivation remains always at the same level. YOU are interested in tracking….. i am interested in tracking. and i am pretty certain that OUR motivations are completely different. what hooks people is similarly diverse and disparate.
what attracted me to this site was that it chose canadian conventions and in particular, WESTERN canadian conventions. you can find ample evidence of that view in my earliest posts. i'll always fight the unnecessary americanization of our culture and, our best avatar of that culture, language. we call them banknotes here, and i am perfectly willing to gently correct anyone who chooses to succumb to the laziness that pervades the usage of our neighbours to the south. that is, after all, the colour of the current discussion.
I don't disagree with you Rudy.
but the point I am to make is that look how many people couldn't find where to enter money.. even as simple as it is.
I know there have been many complainers in the past. even in the forums.
Not only that Rudy.. I am sure there are many who didn't complain..
that is why I made the challenge to you to find out how many people created a name & never entered any bills.
I am 99% sure that 90% or more of them found a bill to track but didn't find where to enter it.
Some of those people may have even found more than 1 bill marked… but cause they couldn't find TRACK MONEY anywhere.. they left & never returned.
How many hits have we trackers missed cause of this problem?
We will never know…
However my 1st line in my 1st post..
Not that I condone or support ignorance.
I definately don't reward it.
It should be pointed out that just because some of us are Site Assistants doesn't mean we have special abilities to look at the statistics of user names created to number of "notes" entered. Some of the users that created accounts may just simply find the whole premise of note (or bill) tracking simply a waste of time.
Some of my friends and even some of my relatives find my penchant for note tracking rather silly. That does not however deter me from entering as many notes as I can.
There may, and that is a big may, be a need to provide additional wording and prompting to show new users where to enter a note. It is something that dr will have to take the time to determine whether or not he has the desire or the time…..
I think Lord_Comedy makes a good point. The "add note" link could easily be missed. Most of the stamps you see say "track this bill" but there is no link anywhere that says that. I have never known a single person who calls a bill a note. A note to most people is a short letter written down. "track bill" or even "track note" would be much more strait-forward and easy to find. A small change like this could encourage new users to become more involved in tracking.
edit I'd just like to add that I think the layout of the site is fine. Our site is ALOT nicer than those other sites. I just agree that this one small change may be good.
The first time I went to enter a marked bill I found…I did not find the add note button. It was too far down the page. I didn't look far enough. My wife entered about 5 marked notes for me. I later joined the site.
I have been using computers since 1972. (yes, we had them then) The add note button belongs at the top. It should be the first thing you see. The reason it's not at the top is to try and get more people to join. All right now, I said it.
I have to admit that I am all for evolution of things, including that of websites. Things have to move along and change as needs changes etc.
As a side note, I think it would be difficult to track down all the people who have tried to enter notes. It seemed to me when I started entering notes, one could do it anonymously as well. I remember giving hits this way until I decided to get an account. I am not sure if it still is like that. So, just having the accounts with no use could be a few of the stats that are being looked for. It could be the tip of the iceberg as far as that is concerned. Also, another thing to think about is that of people that sign up just to look around etc. I know I have done that in the past with other websites, then I forgot about them…..
Actually, I am not really sure how big of deal it would be to change a couple of words in the website. I think a better way of doing things is to maybe to have a poll or something about ease of use. It would take a while to hammer out the details such what to ask or how and when to ask. We might find other issues out as well, as with this case, it is the squeaky wheel that gets the grease as they say.
I logged out to go look at the "home page" before logging in.
I like the way it looks, yet agree the add note ( track money ) button should be closer to the top.
However, you do that then some people may never register.
On the OTHER hand… We want people to track our money & give us hits so we can see where our money has gone.
As for a poll who would we poll?
The people who use the site already know how to track money & add notes.. etc. so the poll might not work the way it should be wanted to work.
As for polling people not belonging to the web page.. Much more difficult. So we have a dillema.
I really just wanted to add my 2 cents worth to this discussion which has gone old…
Maybe this discussion can be flagged to DR's attention. As it does bring attention to the view of the webpage.. which is his baby, which we all like to use.
If anything can be done to make things mor clear or easier to use.. ( faster ) to the lay person. It might make our tracking better.. even if they don't join.
I agree with you 100% on that. This is getting kind of old, fast in my books.
Actually, I wasn't trying to start an arguement with anyone here, but I couldn't think of a better way of being able to attract people. Acually, I always figured that the Newbies have the better perspective because the older crowd became stagnant or too used to the status quo.
Anyways, I was just thinking I would explain further. maybe a popup could have a questionare like I have seen on
other forums etc. This could lead the webmaster to different things as well
I feel too that this is getting beaten to death. I guess it is up to the webmaster now, I am sure we can all agree with his ideas, direction and how much time and effort can be put in on his part etc.
Or, we could make a change to the "add note" button:
"Track/add/list/write/post a note/bill/folding cash/paper money/"
Seriously though, if anyone honestly had a problem navigating the site, they should really just give up computers, cell phones and motorized vehicles.
After reading several of these complaints over the past few years, I would have to say they mostly fall into the 'I don't understand why you people are tracking money so I'll criticize your hobby by attacking your web site' catagory.
Oh geee this sounds like George Bush - you are either with me or against me!!! These are just opinions and suggestions, nothing wrong with that. I have worked with software and programming for 20 years and I personally do not find the process of tracking a note that intuitive when done by a person not registered with the site. That does not make me a hobby attacker does it? It is just a personal opinion nothing else.
