STEALTH NOTE ??

I'm wondering what a Stealth note is.
Im guessing that it is a bill that has been entered but not stamped or written on.
Do many people do stealth notes?
If so why would someone want to do that?
It must surprise a person if they think they are just entering a note & it generates a hit.

You are right about what a stealth note is and it is exciting when another user gets a note that you have entered and it generates a hit much to their suprise..

Sometimes you don't have a choice but to spend the bill before you have a chance to stamp or mark it, thus generating a stealth note.

Well said. I was just going to say the same thing.

I just wanted to say to that, well at least for me, I know when I made bigger purchases with cash, I always only mark some or very few of the notes as I don't usually want to flood someone or a store full of my marked notes. I feel that it would be bad P.R. for this site if someone went somewhere and paid $500 for something in fives with the URL on them. But I'll put the notes in as stealth or not, just so maybe I could get a hit later in life………

i think you just became my favourite member! :) i like your attitude and approach. thank you for putting the welfare of the site ahead of the "competition".

stealth hits are a lot of fun but they can sometimes result from when a member has just entered serial numbers that they know exists but has never seen the notes – this has happened on the site. i once gave a stealth hit unwittingly to a member as i entered serial numbers from crisp, uncirculated notes – quite a surprise! and then there was the story of a member who fairly entered over 1300 serial numbers of notes that he didn't mark or stamp in ANY way and was finally rewarded with ONE stealth hit (that remains his only hit to this day). it was quite an experiment!

Aw shucks Rudyk Thanks

Anyways, I forgot to mention to that, at its happened to me a few times is that I put in the wrong serial numbers for notes on a couple of occasions

What I lost my standing as your favorite member Rudyk I am shocked.

Many times a serial number is entered wroung and can cause stealth bills, also many unmarked bills spent and written down before being stamped. Stealth bills are often just a mistake of the member. It use to be that if you made a mistake on a bill you would contact site administration and they could (time permitting) correct the error. Now as the site has grown and our leaders time limited I think this practice has gone by the wayside. It would be nice if we were able to edit our entered bills (say on entry day only) to correct errors but this is not an option so mistakes remain in the system.

On your other point about members dropping a large number of marked bills at one store for large purchases. I for one only try to carry marked bills at any time and if I decide to spend $500.00 plus in any store they should be happy for the business and not care that the bills are marked. I very seldom have a problem when making large purchases and have never had a bill refused for the stamp. I have had more fifties and hundreds refused as store policy not to accept large bills (stupid policy).
I use to not mark the bills going to the casino but have solved that problem using red stamp as the machines tend to accept them ones with black stamps are almost always rejected.

Actually, Bankcollector made a very good point about the bills and I can respect that. I am just glad that side was said and I say, whatever works as it is up to the individuals and places of business. Its just my preference that I do that.
Actually, I was going to comment about the idea of 50 and 100s being tossed about and the lack of acceptence. I can genuinely see the point as from both sides as one who has in the past carried a few hundred and fifties and I know it sucks sometimes when it comes up, but I just wanted to say that I used to work in retail (sort of, cash business anyways) we didn't have a policy of denying cash, but I do know that when a counterfeit was taken to the bank, money was lost because the bank rejected the money, it was taken out of circulation etc. I too think it was kind of weird as it did seem like it was always smaller stuff that was caught, as it is most likely the smaller bills that are more likely to be counterfeited as it is less likely to attract attention in my books. I am not sure about the stats for 50s and 100s etc, but I think they are just covering their butts more than anything, as nobody else will, but it is kind of different.

rudyk

just to reply on the issue of retailers who have a sign out saying "We do not accept 50s and 100s" – what they are REALLY saying with their sign is, "We do not train our staff to recognize phony banknotes". counterfeiters LOVE these places because, as the Bank of Canada states and knows well, people generally do not counterfeit large denominations (viz.) the best news, of course, is that security features on the banknotes means fewer and fewer bogus ones.

i DO make it my business to tell shop owners their folly and have been occasionally rewarded to see them realize this and take down their sign right in front of me. the others… well, i am not sure about because i simply do not ever shop there again.

Yes I do the same. I am even surprised that a retailer or anyone for that matter can actually make the decision not to accept legal Bank of Canada approved bank notes. Is this legal? I have seen it everywhere but I wonder.
