Did anyone hear about Columbia?

I know it has nothing to do with money, but still. And only 17 years ago Challenger blew up. Possible terrorist attack on this one, but its not official. Also, they claim the guys could still be alive, but at 60,000 metres, or 125,000 feet, going at 25,000 mph, they're dead.

Been watching CNN all morning. Lots of speculation.

Be interesting to see what the final determination will be. It DID lose some material on take off, might be significant.

I've also been watching CNN since I got up, one hour ago. Only about 10 minutes ago did the debris first land, and now its being blocked off.

MmmBeer

I heard about it between bowling alleys driving.. My theory is that a couple of those heat resistant tiles on the bottom of the ship (so on re-entry they don't burn up), fell off and the ship got too hot and did what it did..

3rd time a ship has exploded. I don't think it had anything to do with terrorists at all. It was too high up in the air, the only way would be too launch a missile or what-not from a sattelite.

I don't know what time you guy's posted but the latest as of five was that the tiles on the leading edge of the left wing may have been damaged at seperation during launch. The loss of sensor data just before the breakup would bear that out. But it may be weeks before they know more cause they have to take the debris to a hanger to analize it.

Sarge

Sorry MmmBeer, it's only the second shuttle to be destroyed, not the third.

Considering it disintegrated above or near Palestine Texas, with an Israeli crewmember, I wonder how long it will be before some Muslim cleric says something like 'the hand of Allah struck the Jew out of the sky over Palestine…It is a sign from Allah!'

i figure I will find out about god etc when I die. might be too late but oh well. He or she is probably very dark skinned is the only thing that would not surprise me.

Does anybody ELSE 'not care' about anything?

Sarge: Unless MB meant 3 accidents, then you could count the Apollo 1 fire and deaths of 3 astronauts.

21: schadenfreude: Pleasure derived from the misfortunes of others.

German : Schaden, damage (from Middle High German schade, from Old High German scado) + Freude, joy (from Middle High German vreude, from Old High German frewida, from frō, happy).

Looks like the conspiracy programs have alredy got this one. I was listing to it last night and this nut thinks that they were taking pictures over the desert(SP?) and then they were sent back to the ground after that they had 7 people that knew too much so they killed them. The one good point i heard was "scince when can FOAM dent somthing"

pappahunt

All it has to do is scratch the surface of one tile. Heat and friction will do the rest!! I think this is going to come down to the fact they did not do an inspection of that area during their time in space before the deorbit burn!!

wes_bos

its b/c the box is small. An example is like the black box being a 2 cm pencil and the whole airplane being a 60cm pencil. Wich one do u think will break easier?

magpie

At the speed they were traveling anything could have caused damage. It's like they say if you drop a coin off the CN Tower it will be imbedded into the sidewalk below. They said the foam was high density like that spray foam insulation.

kimberlite

Whatever the cause, it's a sad day. I saw a bit of news this morning about the Israeli Astronaut, saw video of him and his family before he went up. I was sad.

pappahunt

There are accually two boxes one is the voice recorder and the other is a data recorder! I think the data recorder will be the most important of the two. It is not so much what they are made of but how they are made that is the secret to their survival in crashes!

Idjit

Columbia had no 'black boxes'. Telemetry was transmitted to Houston continuously. This is how they know so much already. Commercial aircraft cannot afford to do this.

MmmBeer

Black Boxes aren't black, just so you know. They are Bright Orange Or another bright color so they stick out…

Idjit

Yeah, the term 'black box' comes from the fact that, if you need to look at one, your probably trying to figure out why a bunch of people are dead, and there's that weird feeling that the pilots get when they know every movement they make, and word they speak is going to be analyzed- after they are dead. Kind of morbid = 'black box.' Still, none of them on the shuttle…

pappahunt

I think the term BLACK BOX comes from the fact you don't know whats inside until you open it not colour. I thought that it was an FAA regulation that all air craft had to have them because there are times during reentry when they loose telemitry due to ionization. The shuttle would still fall in that catagorie even if it is a glider!!
