Flash freeze - part 2

Ok, I was watching the Weather Channel last night and there were a couple of weather warnings that make an old prairie guy wonder.

On the West Coast, they have an "Arctic Outflow Warning". I can sort of figure this one out. Since there normally isn't any winter on the Coast, any time a blast of Arctic air comes south, they warn everyone in Lotusland about it.

But in Ontario, they had a "Flash Freeze Warning". I was wondering if you eastern types could explain that one to me.

For example, yesterday morning in Saskatoon, it was -36, with a WC of -51. Now if you step outside, you freeze in a flash! That would be reasonable definition for me. But the lows in Ontario were only -5 to -10. Positively balmy!

They were having rain and wet snow with that and I think at the time it was above freezing. So when the temperature goes down like they said they have instant skating rinks everywhere.

that is basically it. I lived in Ontario for several years and it rained a lot in the winter. it would come down as rain and freeze as soon as it hit the pavement or roads. soooper slippery!!

Well, it snowed for the first time this winter on Friday. Wasn't stiking, as was only +3 out, but then Saturday I guess we got "dumped" on. About 2 inches. Vancouver was just as bad. Now theres snow everywhere. I commented that the coast is turning into Australia, as our winterwas warm, and the summer-spring is getting cold.

I found out that Duncan got the most snow on the island for Friday-Saturday night. App. 25 cms fell, but almost none sticked. By contrast, Campbell River only had 15, and Victoria 10.

Around here the problem is lake efect snow. Leave my house in a howling blizzard and drive 10 Km to Hensall and it's clear as can be, drive another 5 Km and can't see a thing again!!
