Just returned from the local branch of the Scotiabank, where I git into quite the conversation about "Marked Bills". She said to me "Why do people do that?"
When I explained to her that I had marked the bills, she was very frustrated with me and stated that it was illegal to 'deface' the money. She said that they take ALL defaced money and put it in a bag and sent it back to the Bank of Canada to be destroyed. That is thier direction.
I explained that it was NOT illegal to marked the bills and she was VERY upset with me.
Soooo… there were 4x $20 bills that are now out of the system.
Makes you mad.
I told her to check the website and that it will explain that it is NOT illegal to mark/stamp the bills.
Unfortunately, after checking, even I can't find the spot where it explains it. Has it been removed? If it is, ADMIN, PLEASE, PLEASE put it back up. If it hasn't been removed, maybe it should be placed BOLDLY in the Home page area
If the notes are in good condition the Bank of Canada recirculates them..So don't worry about that..If you look under help, note and hit FAQ's you will find the information about marking notes….Hope that helps…
you ask her if she thinks she "defaces" the notes every time she stamps a bundle and even misses slightly. I come across a lot more banknotes similarly "defaced" than I do OUR stamped notes.
these minor functionaries in banks twist me. "excuse me, ma'am, but you have a job that is more than adequately replaced by that ATM over there and since you can't even get it straight what the Bank of Canada's regulations are, I suggest you go and appease and honour your overload by dusting its keyboard."
Many banks have a policy whereby if you are not totally satisfied by their customer service on your visit, you should tell them. I would NOT have passed up the opportunity to convey that I was NOT satisfied.
Sorry for the rant, but i just have not patience with such ignorance as that displayed by this "service representative"
Good call. I was worried about this when I started stamping my own bills, so I bookmarked the CMT FAQs on my phone in case I ever need to pull up the email and show someone.
I haven't had anyone question my bills yet, though. I've gone to the Affinity Credit Union (Canarama branch), and they've been pretty cheerful every time!
