Should I give it back?

I was busy entering bills today from a bundle I got from the bank. I wasn't finished when the 'bill entry limit' screen appeared. Could it be? I asked my kids to count the bills after they stamped them- sure enough- 101 bills in that bundle! Now I'm faced with a moral dilemma: the bank didn't pay 5 bucks more for that bundle, so they're not out. No one will know… What should I do?

dr

I say keep it and give it to your kids as a reward for (a) stamping all your bills; and (b) counting all your bills… Talk about your slave labour. :)

I was hoping for something a little more philosophical…
Besides, my kids are compensated for this work- with marked bills, of course.

I think life is about Karma; if you use the bill for good then it will continue to be good for your Karma. You obviously had good Karma to begin with to have this good fortune… now just continue to reap the rewards by passing the Karma along.

I think you should do what ever your conscience will allow. At the very least tell them?? At the bank where my wife works they recount all the money parcels so it is very likely that somebody was out $5 somewhere but they probably would not look for it.

I had bought a bundle of quarters from the bank, never noticed when I was there but when I was putting them away it had an extra roll in it. I went back and told them and they said it was not possible and would not take it. So I took it back to work and showed over for that day.

HEY…ITS MINE….I went to the bank yesterday for a bundle and was one short……..ok so i lied…..its their mistake. spend it!!!!!

J-Lynn

Yes, its their mistake.. but don't we all make mistakes?
From experience, its not fun being short in your till..
Turn the table around, if you were short a bill, would you say something?
I'd give it back. my 2 cents

If you want to give it to someone. Give it to me. Someone stole my full of stuff suitcase. lol. ouch. No I don't want your money.

Morally, Give it back. Fate Wise, Keep it and do good. Yesterday I bought $50 worth of gift certificates. When I got home I discovered that I had $100. They had stuck together. Bonus! I called the store to inform them of the mistake and said I would be in tomorrow to return the other two. They adamantly stood behind the thought that this mistake COULD NOT have happened. I insisted it did. They offered no further words and reiterated it could not happen. Like MissBeeHaven said I would not want to be short from my end. End of story, I get a free dinner. I'll take my mom out!

Now if it was from the paperboy, you would undoubtedly give it back.

If it was from a locally owned store, you would think about it.

And if it was from a bank that made over 1 billion dollar profit last year, why bother.

Interesting how that works.

Pooda- it's great how you can put things in perspective to clear up difficult moral dilemmas:
Lawyers, banks, insurance companies, government = no
Large department stores, convenience stores, = maybe
Paperboy, waitress, shoe shine boy = yes
Clear as a bell…

It's a bank, they'll get you back somehow before the month is over, just deposit in your account to cover another of their bogus charges. Besides, if you were shorted 5 and didn't notice until you got home, they wouldn't believe you. They would tell you you should have counted it at the bank before you left. As bad as it sounds, from a bank, I would keep it!!!

That reminds me of this fraiser episode I seen last week were the dad fot an extra 40 out of the machine (wanted 60, got 100) so dafne told him to give it back. He first went to the teller to give it back, than the teller told him to goto the manager.. The manager gave him 40 because he believed the machine ripped him off. Now he was up $80. They went home and the next day went back to the bank owner. Who again gave him another 40.. Dafne still believing that it will bring bad Karma told him to bring back the 120. The next day they went and the CEO (or some head official was there), and to get them to forgive the bank for their mistakes, and to settle it out of court, the guy offered them $40,000!!!

It was the funniest ep. ever. LOL

Back in 1986 (I was in labor that's why I remember) the machine only gave me 60 instead of 100. Had to wait until the end of the month to see if the interact was out 40 bucks before they would give it back. I did get it back but it ended up being 6 weeks. Wish they would have made me an offer!!! I'm not that lucky.

I agree…keep it.

A few years ago, I was switching from one type of TD account to another, but kept both for a short time just until I was sure that all my direct deposits were going to the new account. I reduced the old one to $1.00 until that happened. The TD sent me a statement on my balance, charging me a $1.50 statement fee first, (now -.50), then a $2.50 penalty for being overdrawn! Of course I raised h— there, and they offered, 'as a courtesy' to restore the dollar.

I've even noticed the credit card companies will jerk you around too. I paid off a card in full that I had owed about $500.00 on, the day after I had received the statement. The next statement acknowledged that it was paid off, but that I still owed about $0.75. So I called their 800 number and complained (determined to get my monies worth) They called it was 'residual interest', but said they'd take it off 'as a courtesy' as well.

Don't trust the banks or credit card companies. If they make an error in your favour, keep it. (Like the Monopoly Card!)

My dad paid off this credit card bill, but supposedly it was late, so they sent him another bill next month for 7cents for interest..

It costs 20× that just to send the letter, honestly
