The last time I was there I paid for 4 star accommodations and would rate at I got a 1 star.
I got food poisoning from their poor handling of the food. I never felt so ripped off in my life. was sick for most of the holiday and for a few days after the holiday..It did not get better until I went to the hospital a got some meds. lost over 10 pounds. I know other like it there, but I will never return..
As a 'resident' of Mexico, I can feel your pain. But I must insist, that you don't judge the entire country by that one unfortunate incident (sorta like "don't judge a book by its cover").
My wife and I have travelled extensively around the world over the years, and have seen the bad as well as the good.
I remember once taking a (Carnival) cruise originating from Puerto Rico. The Hotel we stayed in for overnight before the cruise (booked through an agent) was to be a 3 star rating. Good enough as we were just spending the night. WELL, let me tell you, it was definitely NOT a 3 star under ANY circumstances. The second floor was totally demolished for 'renovations', there was NO restaurant //dining room, the carpets looked like they were found in the trash….I could go on and on. Thankfully it was only for the night. Do I think all of Puerto Rico is like that. Definitely not.
I'll also add that back in Canada there are some pretty shabby places.
So again, I say, don't blame Mexico. It is a large country with many different diverse areas. AND, some of the best food can be had from the street vendors.

I have been to mexico 4 times and I have also been many other places. There are many place better than Mexico.
I'd pass on Mexico too.
Of the places that I have visited, give me the Big Island of Hawaii or Grenada.
I dream of places like Raratonga and Bora Bora.

While the are is VERY expense, and it based on the $USD, having 65M would definitely help
